Progress so far on my 78 GL1000

Postby chief771 » Sun Mar 17, 2013 8:57 pm

Good Evening!
Just wanted to share with all of you my progress so far on my wing. I started out with not much in the frame but the engine, wheels and handle bars. The rest of it was pretty much in boxes. I started assembly about a month ago so I can not go crazy thinking about it out in my shed and it is too blessed cold to do anything with it. Anyway, the carbs came off and I disassembled them and boiled em clean. They were a mess. all the floats but one were stuck and forget about getting all the needles and seats out. I managed to get it all done and they turned out great. Brakes have been gone through as well as both master cylinders. Tank has been derusted and put back in the bike as well. Anyway, I have included some before and after pics of what is done so far. I am happy with the progress but not so happy with the weather. Near zero again tonight and blizzard warnings for tomorrow. Uff da. It is driving me crazy not being able to work on getting it started. I do have it so it turns over and everything appears to be working on it. Still some electrical tests to do and soldering those three yellow wires together that are known for overheating and ruining the regulator/rectifier. It will be nice to have it done before the mosquitos start hatching. Speaking of which last spring I saw two large mosquitos holding my neighbor down. I heard them talking and one was wondering if they should eat him there or bring him back to the nest. They figured they should eat him there or the big ones would take him away. youch!!!
I was going to post some pics but I am having problems getting them attached. I will work on that and post them when I get this figured out. Have a great night all!

I put the tank covers and seat on today and finally sat on my bike for the first time! It sure felt good. A ways to go yet but closer every day!

Took my wing out for the first time! Still have a few minor issues but it is running and going down the road. Feeling good about the progress! The windshield came off. It is new but looks incredibly stupid on the bike. Would work good on a smaller bike maybe. If anybody wants it I will sell it for 20.00 plus shipping I paid over 70 for it.

Looks great...wish I could get back to my 75. Have just had too many disruptions and can't even blame the weather. Maybe this week can get more done. You'll have a great ride when you get it finished. Lucky you.

Very cool. That's about his my bike looked, but it came with a spare. I spent most of the winter doing pretty much what you did in one month, and took it out on Sunday, whereupon I discovered some problems wih my carbs (idling at 5000 when it warmed up). Go that fixed, and had my first real smooth ride on my 1977 GL1000 yesterday. I'll add some pictures later.

Great looking bike!!
