Postby jonnypar » Sat Apr 13, 2013 10:39 pm

Hello everyone.
My wife and I will be taking a trip from So Cal to Colorado in early July and we are looking for things to do or see along the way. we have about three days for the ride to Colorado. We have a friend in Aspen that we plan on visiting before we get to Boulder.

Are you saying you have 3 days to ride IN Colorado?

Last year we were in SW Colorado for a week. Did the Durango to Silverton train - fun but my advice is make sure you get the bus ride back, not the round trip because that was a long day. Mesa Verde was awesome and worth our time. I don't remember the name of the pass (maybe Independence pass ?), but it was east of Aspen I think and almost 12,000 ft at the summit - very beautiful up there. Have fun !!

I guess we will check out the Grand Canyon on our way to Colorado and Arches National Park on our return trip. And a few gas stations as we go. :D

That's what I was looking for! I would love to watch a couple stupid bungee jumpers and Pikes Peak would be a great visit.
Thank you.

Pikes Peak....I lived in the Springs for 10 years(in the 70's),never went up there.
I got nervious about the road which I've heard has been improved greatly.
Be warned tho.....it's narrow,twisty,shear cliffs and thin air...above 14,000 feet....My word..even trees don't grow up there.
I've heard of 78* in the springs and snowing 30* at the visitor center on top.
The drive will pucker you to your seat..that's for sure. :D
Here's a video link if you'r interested.

WOW! Both videos are great and thank you for posting. I think I'll pass on the Flying Eagle zipline. My fear of heights will not allow me to experience that.
Thanks for the ideas.

Just like me...I have no fear of heights as long as my feet touch the ground. ;)
My wife can't even watch a video of a roller coaster ride. :D
If the thought of driving to the peak doesn't interest you, consider this option...

I've been doing some reading and Independence Pass looks like it's a must see. And since we will be staying in Aspen that should be an easy ride to get to. Cottonwood Pass also looks like a for sure visit. I gotta make sure I have all 3 batteries charged for my camera because from what I have seen and read, there are many scenic clicking oppurtunities. Pikes Peak is a place I have always wanted tio visit and who knows when I'll have the time again to visit so we will be hitting that area as well.

On the way to Aspen as we get into Utah we have decided to veer off route 15 onto 17 then take the 9 through Zion National Park. The ride looks absolutely breathtaking. I just hope I rememeber to stop to take some pictures.
Has anyone ridden through Zion?

Thanks for the video, I don't think I'll be going to Pikes Peak anytime soon! I don't like roads like that on the wing!!
Road through Zion National Park, The ride IS breathtaking! A must see!
If you have time Cedar Breaks National Monument, Cedar City, UT is worth the ride.
I’d rather be Riding my Motorcycle thinking about God
Than sitting in church thinking about my Motorcycle

That video is from 2008 . Since then they have paved the road to the top. When I was last there in 2011 there was only a few miles of unpaved roads but the work was scheduled to be done in 2012.

The sides are not so 'cliff like" that you will fall 10,000 feet. The sides are mostly gradual rocky slopes, going off the road surface would be very bad...but perhaps not fatal....

I like that....perhaps not fatal. :o
Paved or not Pikes Peak is a must do just to say I did it. I'm not sure what the fires have done to the area but I'm hoping not too much.
I keep finding more and more great roads on the way to Aspen. I have already delayed our arrival in Aspen a day so we could explore more of Zion. I'm looking forward to Using my GoPro camera for the Zion drive. I'm having a hard time deciding whether I want to face the camera straight ahead or if I want to have it facing to the side to catch all the sites I may miss. :?:
