tears in seat: fix?

Postby DetroitWingnut » Tue Apr 30, 2013 3:02 am

It seems to me that 9 out of 10 GL1100 seats have tears in the same places; at the corners where rider's butt goes. I would be interested in hearing how gl 1100 owners may have fixed their seats without replacing the whole seat cover, which probably won't fix future tears in same areas...

As you can see from this photo taken from the classifieds, tears are very common

The best I've been able to do in a pinch is...
Remove the cover....the area is usually hard and the Stitching is torn.
Restitch as best as possible.By hand..Get a vinyl repair kit. Clean the area and glue a support fiber over the tear area.
Let it cure for a few hours and staple the cover back on.

remove the seat cover and turn it inside out, now sew it by hand using a good black heavy duty thread from the inside out.. I just paid $60 and got a new seat cover though..Seat will last me a long long time now.. It will probably out last me...

I could say the obvious: "Duct tape"!

It depends if you just want a temporary fix to stop the tear from spreading (a bit like a star chip in a car windscreen) until you can get into doing a more permanent fix.

I believe that you can get duct tape in a number of colours (apart from green) that may not be as contrasting colourwise.

The world is not going to finish today, as it is already tomorrow in Australia and New Zealand, and other islands of foreign nations such as Guam and Samoa.

If the future tears happen in 2043, I'll fix them then.
30+ year old stitching, foam and vinyl are at the end of their lifecycle.
