Crispy fingers

Postby WingAdmin » Tue May 07, 2013 8:58 pm

A stupid, careless mistake. I was holding a bare, 14 gauge wire in my fingers tonight when I accidentally shorted it across a motorcycle battery terminals. The wire melted while I was holding it. The result: nice third-degree burns on my left thumb and forefinger. This is going to take a while to heal.

I did almost the exact same thing when I was just a kid, with the exact same results. I still have the scars, permanently altering my fingerprints.

I can still smell the burning skin. :(

Actually it doesn't hurt at all - it destroyed all the nerve endings.

Holy crap! Not good not good....and that was a second time. Nerve endings grow back, don't they? Well, enough bike work for now, now is time to type on the board here ;)

I got careless around a 800 mhz. transmitter and got a bad rf burn from it once....

Gave a whole new meaning to the word ...MEGAHERTZ.

Now you going to have to redo all you finger prints, so they will know who you are. Dont know which hurts worse, the burning wire or the RF burn.

Yeah, my fingerprints will be permanently altered. I can still see the scar on my finger from when I did it as a kid, it messed up the fingerprint on that finger as well.

Mag, nerve endings grow back...eventually. :)

And beav, yeah, you got it - taking a short cut, not paying attention, thinking about something else. Ah well.

And Beav...just for you:

It didn't hurt (and doesn't hurt) one bit, not even the slightest. I burned and destroyed all the nerve endings, so nothing left to send the "ouch that hurts" signal - hence, no pain.

WingAdmin, I bet that the smell of the burning skin kinda stuck for a few minutes. Not a pleasant odor to me.

I just looked at it tonight - the wire didn't short out on the battery terminal, it actually shorted out on the battery clip that was attached to it, from the Battery Tender. Melted a little piece out of that thing as well.

Did you use Krispy Kreams to dress those burns? Glad to see no infections, and that the FBI will no longer be able to trace you. Get better soon.

For as long as you can 'tolerate' bandaids, put keep vitamin E on the burns. Helps the healing and my experience is that it helps minimize the scarring.

I know how you feel. Have done it several times in different ways over 40 years of mechanic work. The worst was when I was building a trailer from a wreaked car. I cut the front spindle off with a torch a set it up on top of the frame, ,took my gloves off and the spindle started to fall so natural reaction to grab it, well I took all the finger prints and put a nice bubble in the center of my palm. I wasn't as lucky as you, I felt every bit of it.
