There where several recalls for the early goldwings, the biggest one in my opinion, was a recall where the frame had to have additional welding added to it (Major strip down and weld job) make sure it has been done!! I am sure someone can point you to the location for all the 1800 recalls, in general they are great bikes but the models prior to 2006 need to be checked for the recalls.

I am sure this info must be on this site somewhere, but after the recal was done, the honda dealer was required to punch a dent/hole in the VIN plate of the wing to show it had been welded.. I will look a bit more and find the link.

I couldn't find the recal info on this site, but here is a link to all the recals:-

http://www.recallowl.com/Vehicle+Recall ... NDA/GL1800

Click on the year of the wing you are interested in and it shows the recals for it.

i'm not sure if the '01's had the cooling issue but you can check on that too
if you buy it make sure the valves have been adjusted, it should be done at around 32,000 miles if i remember right

They're all online here, on the Manuals page - look at Service Bulletins and Recalls: GL1800 Manuals
