Newbie possibly buying a 1985 GL1200I tonight Any advice?

Postby toddman015 » Thu Jun 06, 2013 4:55 pm

Hello all! I have come across a deal that almost sounds to good to be true on a 1985 GL1200 Interstate. I am going to look at it tonight and possibly make the purchase. Anyone have any advice on things to watch out for that could be otherwise overlooked?

Look out for charging trouble, If you can take a multi meter with you and check the charge volts @ the battery while running. You should get 13 or so at idle maybe 13.25-13.75 with some throttle.

Check out the Stator and find out when/if it has been replaced, ask about timing belts. Bought mine, ran great for several months, then the stator went. I quit turning wrenches quite a few years ago and it was an expensive repair. But, after new tires, tune up, brakes and a few other misc items I didn't want to part with it. After the new stator, it has run very well until just now. Seems that the carbs bog down when carrying a load (uphill, passenger). Thinking of upgrading. Good Luck with your purchase. I've had a ton of fun on mine. Handles much better than my smaller Virago ever did. Very comfy on distance rides....

Well, it did not work out. The guy had already sold the bike by the time I got there.
