3/4 vs full face helmet?

Postby oldmopars » Thu Jul 11, 2013 8:53 am

I have 2 full face helmets and both are very good. However I do not get much air flow on the Wing and so I end up riding with the visor up. It also make the radio harder to hear.
What do you all use? Safety is a big one for me, but comfort is also.
I still need the full face for my other bike.

The full face helmet I have has vents, although not very big, and the clear face can be raised so only the short tinted guard is down. This does help on hot high humid days. But if I close it up, you are right. You can hardly hear the radio and the air inside gets a little stifling.

I have the HJC modular helmet. With the front down it covers like a full face helmet. With the front flipped up it's like a 3/4 helmet, but you don't want to ride more than 50+mph because the wind whips it around a bit. It has a tinted half shield that slides down inside the helmet and the clear flip up shield on the front. Vents in the top and bottom front and does give decent air flow if my head is above the windshield. With the front down and clear shield opened up I can hear my stereo if riding about 65 mph or less. Any faster and the wind noise gets louder. The only thing I don't like is if it's raining and you forget close the vents you get wet inside the helmet. Otherwise, it's a comfortable helmet and not heavy at all.

i am still wearing an hjc ac3 3/4 helmet with a dark smoke faceshield. hearing the radiois not an issue with the headset i installed. it doesn't offer the protection of a ff helmet but is much cooler than my ff helmet and almost as warm and dry with the face shield closed

In the summer I ride with my open face 3/4 for the sheer comfort and airibility of it. In the spring and fall I use my HJC modular. So, I use a combination of two helmets to "get-r-Done...LOL

I too have the HJC modular helmet. I ride with the chin bar locked down but the shield cracked up about an inch or so, that allows good ventilation and you can also hear the radio better when I'm not listening to music through my chatterbox Bluetooth headset.

I have the showiest madular a bit pricey. But it vents pretty. Good for the little air you get behind. The goldwing windshield

I have a modular helmet with vents and I find the vents do not vent worth a darn! I always ride with the chin piece down and locked and the face shield up about 1/2 - 1" which allows air flow, prevents fogging, and the radio sounds like it is inside the helmet with me!

It a wreck where you are projected forward or over the bars, the chin is the first thing to hit the ground in most instances. Full face helmets make a huge difference in this instance. Not fun having no chin, I would think. I wear a full face or flip front with the bar down all the time.

I use a 3/4 helmet. No shield, just good glasses for night or day. I get so hot with a face covering and it makes it very uncomfortable for me. I use speakers in the helmet for the radio so hearing it isn't an issue. I am close to needing a new helmet and will be looking at a 3/4 with the flip down sunshade. Tat way I can wear clear glasses and just flip it up when the sun goes down.

We wear full face but my wife complains about the weight, thinking of getting 2, 3/4 ones at least for the summer.
I wonder how much this baby will cast!? Could be great to use.

My wife says she wants a full face for the protection but every time we go to The Helmet Center and she tries to put one on she can't get it over her head. The claustrophobia kicks in.

I open the front to put it on and take it off. This way I can put it on with glasses and leave it flipped up until ready to ride. I also live very rural and the face shield has stopped more than one bug, although the close up of bug guts was a bit morbid.

No one talking about those old-looking open face WWII German-looking helmets. Totally open face......how is the riding experience on a totally open-face helmet? Seems like you would feel more "one with the road" wearing something open like this. Sometimes I feel like I am in a cave looking out in my full-face.

I don't remember when I started wearing a full face but ALWAYS do now. Our club had a group ride recently and one of the riders switched to a 3/4 during the ride because it was "too hot" out. Of course he was the one to go down on a curve due to gravel, and got a 2" cut across his chin. Hind sight is 20/20.

We tried those for her too and she was not able to pull the front down. As it would go past her eyes and nose she had to push it back open. Even tried it with her eyes closed and it was a no go. With the 3/4 she has a face shield on it but her chin and all of that is "out" so it doesn't have the same effect. Problem is pretty much solved now though. She is less and less into riding anymore so I am solo 85% of the time.

A little sweat never hurt anyone, but a road in the face would be a problem for me. Full face all the way.

I would prefer to wear my modular helmet. If offers much better protection and I was able to for a little while. I have developed a serious case of claustrophobia and just can't do it. I now wear 3/4. I took a spill3 months ago and heard my helmet hit the ground. I felt nothing so it did its job well. I just got a new G Max 3/4 helmet with built in sun shade. So far it is well vented and comfortable.
