There is a site that allows you to download maps that work on Garmins. Cant remember where, but I found one when looking for update maps for my C320 Garmin. I hate Garmin's attitude of turning off support for older GPS machines, at their convenience.

You mean "life time updates" really isn't?

Mine did that and I discovered that I was zoomed out to far. Most of the time it looked like I was riding out in the pasture. Somebody suggested that I try zooming in and sure enough the roads reappeared. I still ended up replacing it since it would not recognize zip codes, cities or addresses in North or South Carolina when I went to wing ding. It even wanted to send me 245 miles to a restaurant. As soon as I crossed the state line leaving South Carolina it new where it was again. I gave it to my daughter in law since she isn't going to the Carolina's any time soon.

I think that you should read it as: "For the life of the product, as determined by Garmin." That means that when the product goes 'old' their support goes out. It is similar to Microsoft, they withdraw support from their products when it reaches 'end-of-life'; or when Honda dealers will not service GW that are more than 10 years old. More built-in obsolesence.

Newer Garmin products than the 2610 run on the NT operating system. Garmin no longer supports the older OS operating system that the 2610 runs on. I have a couple of Garmin 2720s which are early NT units that came out about 2006. They are fine to this day and I have no problem downloading updated maps. Any unit running NT can be upgraded.
