New tire from MotorcycleSuperstore date code 4911

Postby Happytrails » Sat Oct 05, 2013 5:17 pm

I just got a new front tire from Motorcycle Superstore and its date code 4911 so its about 2 yrs old? The tire I took off it was 2 1/2 yrs old (but badly dryrotted). Is this typical to get a 2 yr old tire?

Absolutely not. If I get a tire that was not manufactured within the past six months, I send it back telling the store that the tire is "expired". Even a six month old tire might be two years old before I am done with it, so I don't even like that old a date. On my Harley, the tires I just put on were only weeks old, and that made me very happy. I never wear those tires out any more. I took a set of Dunlops off that were three years old and had about 3/4 the life left in them. I believe I had perhaps 3K miles on them, but I don't like old tires, especially on a motorcycle. On my RV trailer, I replace tires after four years, and on my truck, after six years. I have not worn out any tires with the exception of the Goldwings tires. Those, I wear out. Usually in one year. Nope, I would be sending those tires back to Motorcycle Superstore with an explanation asking for much newer dates, or a refund.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

I contacted Motorcycle Superstore. They said they would take the tires back and send me newer ones. Problem is I already have the front tire mounted and on the bike. I haven't checked the rear one yet. I expressed my dissatisfaction about it and the rep I had told me he had tires older than 5 years on bikes and rode them rough with no problems. I was like... uh ok. Maybe this was my fault not looking at the date code before I got the front tire mounted. Regardless I think they pretty much lost any of my future business.

Yup thats so true. I'm lookin at this as a learning experience. Next time I'll check the date codes first. The rear tire they sent me is about 10 months old so not bad there.

This just convinces me even more, screw a $25.00 to even a $50.00 savings, I will buy my tires locally where I can check the date BEFORE they get near my bike. Just my $0.02 worth.

I just received a new tire from an Ebay seller. It was dated "0109", first week of 2009. Of course, I was alarmed about the age of the tire, since it will be 5 years old next January, so I did some research on tire aging. Found this in-depth study that was done on automobile tires in, I believe 2009, at http://www.safetyresearch.net/safety-issues/tires/. (If clicking on the link doesn't work, copy it into your browser searchbar, not in the URL locator, then click on the first choice that comes up with this address.) It seems that 6 years is the maximum recommended age limit for a tires' safe usage, regardless of age or amount of wear. This applies to an unused spare or even a brand new tire stored in a dark building. This is a quote from their website: "The agency (The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) reviewed insurance company tire claims reported from 2002 through 2006 and found 77 percent of the tire claims came from five hot-climate states (including California) and 84 percent of these claims were for tires more than six years old. This is the strongest published evidence to date of the link between tire age and tire failures." I don't know if Virginia, my state, is one of the other four states included in this study. They weren't listed.
After 5 or six conversations by e-mail with the Ebay store owner, who offered a full refund, I've decided to use the tire. In a previous post, I talked about a blow-out I did have on the rear after I put 1,500 miles on the 16 year-old tire that came with the bike. That tire had a fair amount of tread and looked fairly new. It simply fell apart, so I know that age had to be the reason for it's failure. Hopefully, I'll be in a position to let you know the mileage i get with the tire. Ride safe!

They were hoping you didn't check the date as many guys do not because they are so excited that they got new tires they don't bother..

Now I have to go check the dates on the new tires I ordered from them for the 75 gl1000 I am working on (right now thinking about working on). I have not even unwrapped them. They been sitting in the garage for a few months now.

Also from now on, if I again order tires on the net I will look for a place for remarks Most order slips have one. In that area, I will specify DO NOT SHIP ANY TIRE OLDER THAN 90 DAYS, IT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AND ANY CHARGES AGAINST MY CREDIT CARD WILL BE REVERSED. IF YOU CANNOT PROVIDE SUCH TIRE, CANCEL ORDER SO I CAN ORDER FROM SOMEONE WHO CAN.

That should cover future purchases.

What gets me is how arrogant the customer service rep was when I voiced my complaint. There are other places to get tires from. Your suggestion is a good one. If they have one of those options next time I order I'll type something similar.

Signs of the times, I am seeing similar effects all the time from stores selling expired food items to even my own personal rant against my satellite service. All one can do is become more diligent and just put your foot down. About my TV, after 6 months of lousy HDTV from Dishnetwork I called them up and told them they can have their HDTV receiver back, I am going back to standard definition, they cannot provide a dependable product I can suspend my monthly payments.

I agree with the voting with your wallet idea. All these monster size companies that think they can do what they want. It may mean doing without some things but if everyone would do it, the companies would be forced to provide a decent service. Phone companies like AT&T, and the others, TV from Dish and the others all just stick it to you and figure you have no choice. You either go by their one way rules, or do without because they are all doing the same thing. Well folks, I do without...I have never had Cable, or Dish or any other service. I got an outside antenna and with the crap they have on the networks, very seldom watch much of that. My phone is bare minimum and my house phone is "magicjack". So screw the phone companies too. I may not have all the fancy functions, but I also am not owned by some phone company who will not even talk to me face to face. Go in the At&t phone store and ask about a problem. They tell you to dial an 800 number. They don't have any authority...So screw them all. I don't need any of their modern crap. Only have a phone for 911 anyway. Saves me about $2500 a year between the two that I can spend on bikes.

About the Dishnetwork, I cancelled their services, installing a larger less expensive Direct Tv setup today.
Having to endure 6 long months of winter in Alaska pretty much demands good home entertainment, I have hundreds of bluray movies for a backup.

DirectTV is pretty awesome. If it wasn't for sports channels I think I'd get rid of cable/satellite TV altogether and just use Hulu, Netflix, etc... and save a nice bit of money.
