Server issues

Postby WingAdmin » Mon Oct 21, 2013 11:12 am

You might have noticed over the past few days some issues with the site. The server has been at max capacity for a little while now, and the site has been getting slower and slower as a result (particularly in the evenings). Twice this weekend the whole site went down for a short while, which is horrifying to me!

I've been working on this for a while, and I'm currently building the replacement server. It's got 8 times the RAM, four times the CPU horsepower, and 14 times the disk space of the old server. However it will take time - I'm hoping to get it up and running by this weekend, and I'll move the site across then. In the meantime, please bear with me, I have to fit this stuff in around my actual real job. :)

I did notice problems and was hoping you were taking care of the issues as soon as possible. Trike Talk is having the same issues. Your not working on both at the same time are you? Huh, just a coincidence.

I had no idea you hosted the site on your own server, WingAdmin. It puts a new light on the term "site owner". I commend you on all the work you put in, as when you build a site from the ground up in reality, and then manage it, and troubleshoot it, etc, etc, etc, it is a whole pile of work. I appreciate what you do even more, and that's a lot. I used to wonder why you had no moderators, but now I know. You do not require them.

I just want to say THANK YOU!! I feel for you a LOT! When I was working I was a Controls Engineer programming industrial machines and I know what it takes to build this system! I appreciate what you do and all the work you put in, as when you built this site from the ground up, and then manage it, is a LOT of work!! Again, Thank You!

Thanks guys - yes, it's actually two servers, one web/database, one mail. I replaced the mail server earlier this year, and the server this site runs on is now five years old, which is ancient in terms of technology! So it's definitely time.

We all appreciate the work you continue to put into this site. Personally, I've used the How-to's 5 or 6 times on my '82 and would never have tried to do it without them. And the chat room is the 1st or 2nd site I check when I get to work (after my work allows me). Your versatility is to be admired, and agiain, Thanks!!!

I experienced a few problems but none of them were long lived and I never complain about something I get for FREE!
Thank you for all your hard work to provide a great resource.

When I came to this site 4 years ago I didn't know beans from apple butter about these wings, The things I have learned here is just amazing, I think understanding how something works really helps to repair it...when you bring together so many minds you're going to have a lot of different methods of a repair which I find great because you have options...Idea's to share...One thing I really like is the photo's with explanations. So many times I read stuff but I just don't get the full picture in my mind, but seeing a photo makes the light go on and I totally get it....Helping others out is what this site is about, some of us go way out of our way to do just that, I am no expert at anything but what I do know I can pass on....this site is not about trying to one up someone, it's about helping someone out...And having fun doing it... I love this site, it's awesome.... :D

I don't know about you Beav, but when I know how something works and is put together, I'm MUCH more comfortable riding/driving/flying it.

That's pretty much how I feel. When I got my bike last spring (12) I couldn't wait to tear the tupperware off it and see what made it go, and how it was put together. Last winter the bike was mostly apart till the end of Feb. when the weather started getting nicer....this winter have timing belts to do, brakes, H.I.D. kit and am going to tighten up the steering head bearings too, and gonna replace the speakers front and back...going to be a front end of the bike winter for sure! ;)

I have not been a member for very long, but I visit this site daily. I love all the How to's, and everything else on this site. I had no idea you ran this site all by yourself. Sometimes it is a thankless job and a lot of work. I have a question. Is it possible for me to donate to your site to help keep it up and running? You use your own money, your own resources and your own time to make it possible for all of us Bike lovers to keep rolling down the road on correctly running Motorcycles. Let me know how I can contribute. With your permission, I would also like to post a suggestion to the other members about possibly voluntarily donating anything they could to help out. I know you don't want to make it a pay site, and I applaude you for that. Just a little something to help with the hardware issues. Cant't be cheap.

No donations are required or requested. Yes, it is a tremendous amount of work, but I really do like running the site, and the advertisement clicks and sales of products (usually) pay for all the cost of running the site. This month will be an exception. :)

But thanks, I'd rather see money donated to a worthy charity than to me.

Once again Wing and his work comes to the surface. Usually he is in the background kinda like the shepherd guiding his sheep. But in reality if it weren't for him we would not have this site. We enjoy a free medium of being able to trade ideas thru the common bond of we all love Honda Gold Wings. How great is that? Someone took the time to set up this network, get together advertising, keep up with hackers, keep up with changing technology and outdated equipment. I think we owe this man and his family a steak dinner or something. If each of us donated$1.00 he could have a nice 3 day vacation with his family. Toss the left over into the kitty for the next upgrade. Anyone else like this idea?

Just want to throw my thanks in also. I don't turn many wrenches anymore but I do appreciate knowing the DYI's are there for me to study so I know what is going on with my bikes.

I too had noticed the site problems, but see, I was so confident that it could not be the site I figured it was my computer. Now you spoiled my reason for getting a new one. Like your server, my laptop is 5 years old and was a strip down model to begin with so it needs to go. Got to think of another reason now.

Just wanted to update everyone on the progress. This has been far, FAR more work than I expected it to be. The old server was a Windows 2003 server - because we're running much larger drives, the new server is a Windows 2008 server. I had hoped that the site would be more or less plug and play, just move it across and things would work, but that unfortunately hasn't been the case. I've been doing a lot of testing and writing code to adapt the site to work with the new server operating system. That's what I do for my "real" job as well, so I do it all day, then come home and do it all night - and all weekend... :)

Getting very close, however. The test site is running quite well, only a few small snags remaining and I'll be ready to switch over to the new server. I will have to move files and messages across, so the site will likely be down for a half hour or so when I do it - I'll let everyone know in advance.

There will probably be a few little problems here and there that I missed, so when we are back up and running on the new server, if you see anything odd or not working right, please let me know.

It will definitely be in better shape and work better than the Obamacare web site, that's for sure! :)

Might want to talk to Randy Johnston on the Triketalk website. We're going through that right now also. Looks like most all of the bugs are worked out. I wish I knew just a fraction of the stuff you have to know to be able to operate a site like this (these)!!!!

My hat's off to you!!
