New guy intro...

Postby TheChief » Wed Oct 30, 2013 12:29 pm

Just joined and figured I'd introduce myself.

Name's Cliff, but my friends call me Chief. Retired after 21 years, 11 months and 10 days in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club in June of '92. Currently ride a '91 Yamaha Venture Royale with a Voyager trike kit, and an '03 Sportster. Got my own tools and lift, do my own work. When I'm not ridin', or wrenchin', or fixin' a 'puter (got me a degree in Computer Electronics in '94, spent some time at Microsoft..), I enjoy spendin' time out under the stars catchin' photons with a Meade 2080 8" SCT. Got me a good dog, my own place, and a woman that loves to ride, which is what brings me here.

The deal is, I'm spoiled. I love bein' on the Sporty, but there's just somethin' about being 2up with some tunes playin' in your headset runnin' 75 down the interstate. The '91 is good for that, and with us bein' retired, we ride pretty near every day it ain't rainin' or that white stuff is on the road... The VR was neglected when we bought her, and even though I fixed her up and I treat her right, she's startin' to get a little tired and finicky, and I got a feelin' its about time to put her out to pasture. I thought about gettin' a Royal Star Venture, and I had my eye on a pretty white one with tan seats, but then I saw a white '94 GL1500, and so I've started lookin' around...

Don't get me wrong, Yamaha makes a good bike, but their tryin' way to hard to look like H-Ds, and if I wanted another H-D I'd buy one. Besides, I turned 62 in July, and seein's how I want to keep takin' long comfortable rides I reckon I oughta be throwin' a leg over a Wing.

So, what I'm lookin' for is a '90's model, most likely an Aspencade or an SE (Basically the same bike?) that hasn't been "blinged out" with a bunch of useless gee gaws and potential sources of electrical fires. Color doesn't matter too much. GF likes purple stuff, but she ain't payin', so she don't get to choose, and I'm not too fond of green on a bike, and unless it's USN Blue and Gold, I'm not lookin' for a "theme bike" either.

The other thing I'm lookin' for is info about these bikes. Every brand and model has its "gotchas", and I'd like to get up to speed on what to look out for, what to stay away from and what "extras" need to be don to keep the bike runnin' for as long as possible.

Well, I guess I've flapped my jaws long enough, so I'll just grab a cold on, find me a quiet corner and listen.

Thanks for listenin', and Y'All ride safe.

Don't worry too much about previous owner bling and electric disasters - I spent a couple days pulling a bunch of that off my 1500 when I got it. I found a bit more mystery wiring that I pulled out the following winter when I did a much more involved disassembly, but as long as they haven't cut into the wiring and done major stupid things, it's not too tough to pull out.

Welcome to the site! You've picked the perfect bike for what you're looking to do.

Welcome to the forum...You've landed in the best one to find what you're looking for. I learn something new everyday here. I spend any extra time just trolling through the many, many pages and reading through the entire threads learning problems/solution, and have made good use of the "how to articles", these are gold...Don't miss the classifieds tab either you might find exactly what you're looking for.

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm not worried about bling and such, its just that when I see a lot of bling the first thing that pops into my head is "What the (bleep) were you thinking?" I saw an add on Craigslist that made me want to puke. This poor bike is covered with Goldwing badges, about 8 bazillion lights, and this gawd awful orange looking wood grain trim... The owner needs to be shot and the bike needs some serious therapy...

I guess you could say I'm a stock kina guy. I can see upgrading things that make the bike more comfortable and safer to ride, but some people go way overboard, and more often than not the bike doesn't get the attention it really needs.

Roger that! I've already spent some time looking around. The center stand videos are great! A friend has a Kaw 1200 Voyager II with a similar center stand, and I'm wondering why Yamaha never picked up on that? I downloaded the spec sheets and the color code files. Those will go a long way in helping me narrow my search.

Yeah, something along those lines. I like shopping too, but ya gotta watch out for the scammers. Over the last couple of days I've nailed a couple to the wall. On "seller" had pictures of this sweet white Aspencade trike conversion listed for just over $5K. I knew it was a scam, but I played with her for a bit. Her story was she was recently divorced and had relocated from DC (where the bike was listed), and the bike was at a shipper waiting to be sent to a buyer... Yeah right, and I've got ocean front property in AZ for sale....

Another one has a bike listed in about 12 different adds in as many cities.

Anyway, here are a couple I'm considering:

http://winstonsalem.craigslist.org/mcy/4129565576.html
http://harrisonburg.craigslist.org/mcy/4123700827.html

The last one is a tad on the tacky side, and I really like the white ones, especially the one in Lexington NC...

Welcome aboard, Chief. Lots of good folks with lots of good info here. I don't see how you can go wrong with a used Wing unless it's been underwater or cremated. You will enjoy it and the 1st Mate will enjoy it even more. Ride safe!

Maintenence records! GW are smooth, quiet if you want that. Make great trikes. I like no oil on the ground, gas tank UNDER the seat for lower CG- and 100-300k miles !
