Has anyone here rode over 1000 mile in 21 hours?

Postby mr.ngs » Fri Nov 01, 2013 8:57 am

I did recently. Whoa. I had started the morning off with 2 rides on the tail of the dragon in NC. After that I was so amped, that I just continued riding all the way home to southeast Houston.

Of coarse, in the back of my head I was inspired by the book "Against the wind". Great book to read about long distance touring. Recommended reading if y'all like long distance challenging tours.

I drove 1000 miles alone in a car once. Didn't enjoy it at all and certainly wouldn't do it again in a car or on a bike.
"It´s a friggen motorcycle, it´s not supposed to be comfortable, quiet or safe. The wind noise is supposed to hurt your ears, the seat should be hard and riding it should make you s**t your pants every now and then. "

Not 1000, but did 888 miles in 16hrs. Went from Portsmouth, NH to the Indiana Ohio border had to stop because lighting was in the distance.

725 miles from San Leandro, CA to where I live now in WA, 1 day break, then another 725 miles back....so 1550? with a day for my butt to gain its feeling back....that is not bad.

You should have documented the ride to become a IronButt member!

No!Never had to be anywhere that bad I guess.I really don't get this whole Iron Butt thing anyway.Since when did it come into being that we need to prove how far we can ride in one shot to be a real biker?I'd sooner spend 4 6 hour days doing 1000 miles of backroad.Maybe I'm just getting old.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.

I kind of agree - I didn't reall care that much about making a statement of how far I could go in one day - it was just a trip I needed to make, and I knew I would have no problem doing it on my bike.

I like the all day low miles beautiful scenery....but my ride was moving from CA to WA, and the only way I could get the bikes up (my wife had her's at the time too) was to drive the first bike up, driving the moving van back and then drive the 2nd bike up.....now that I am up in the mountains, nothing but backroads, etc., etc.

It is all about the ride, not always the destination for me.

I have done 800 miles in one stretch, when I got a brand new Ultimate seat, just to see how it would feel to do it. At the 800 mile mark, I had reached home, so that is all I rode. I could likely have done another couple of hundred though. Way back in my youthful days, I used to do this all the time on my Harley. I was a lot tougher then though. Now I am more like creme cake than whipcord and leather. I agree with those above who stated that there was no longer a need to do this at our advanced age, so, although I may do it again in future - there will be a good reason if I do.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

The longest ride I have made was returning to OKC from Jacksonville, Fl. 1250 miles. Made it in 20+ hours. That was back in the 80s. I then had an 83 gl1100i. Not anymore though. Now if I ride too long I get too tired and find myself making errors in judgement that could cause an accident. Actually, even back then, I had the same problem I just didn't have since enough to stop. Seems that 500 miles is approaching my limit today.

I done 1,026 on My Vmax in 17 hours about 6 years ago on an unplanned trip from Santa Fe Tx to Florida. I cant say it was really fun & I really don't care to do it again.

A few times. Mostly from CO to Chicago, occasionally the reverse. First time was on an '82 CB650SC (first year Nighthawk). Bloody thing got 36 mpg and had a 3.2 gal tank. I ran out of gas in Rochelle after midnight. Had to push across town to get to an open station! Couple times on my 900 Trophy, which was easy. 750 miles/day I've done more times than I could count. Almost every bike I've owned I've ridden that much in 24 hours.

Guess it has to do with being in the Midwest - all the good riding is elsewhere...and I wanted to get there.

Every year I ride from Venice, Fl. to Cleveland, Ohio straight thru. Approx 1200 miles in 19 hours. That includes gas, bathroom stops and a stop for a meal. I am 68 and have no problem doing this on my '06. I am in a hurry so it is all interstate. Set the cruise get my favorite station on the XM radio and with a drink in the cup holder I am ready for anything.

That's the spirit. Although, "Guess it has to do with being in the Midwest - all the good riding is elsewhere...and I wanted to get there" makes a lot of sense to.
