Is it ok to mix tire brands/styles on your bike?

Postby DetroitWingnut » Tue Nov 26, 2013 6:47 am

I need new tires on my 1980 GL1100. I have heard good comments about Avon Venoms, but can't find one that fits the rear rim (130/90-17). Avon does make this size in "Roadrider", but I have seen some bad reviews due to sidewall cracks. Randakk likes Bridgestone Spitfire S11s, and when I checked MotorCycle Superstore they had these to fit the rear but not the front (110/90-19). Should the tires on a motorcycle be "matched", i.e. same brand and style? Or would it be ok to put an Avon Venom on the front and a Bridgestone Spitfire on the rear? I don't mix my tires on my car...

From personal experience I have mixed brands of tires with no ill effects but I have not nor will not mix a bias ply with a radial. Check out Metzlers for your 1100. They are a little more expensive to buy but I get excellent wear from them and they have great handling characteristics. Without running the numbers I would say cost per mile is as good if not a bit better than the less expensive tires.

Thanks Sagebrush. Within minutes after I posted this inquiry I had a pop-up advertisement from Motorcycle Superstore for a matching set of Bridgestones! Will look into your suggestion of Metzlers ...
