Goldwing trailer hitch choice?

Postby onelostsock » Thu Dec 12, 2013 4:22 pm

I recently bought a Kompact Kamper Excell trailer(used but in "new" condition) for my '06 Goldwing and have been wondering if I could get everybodys opinion as to whether I should keep the trailer hitch that it came with, or is one of the "rotating" ones a better choice? I will be new to trailering this year but have been riding a Goldwing since '86. Thanks for any comments on this subject and all have a great Holiday Season!!

I use the swivel mount for my trailer, only because that is what I had, but I guess it really doesn't matter. I doubt that when towing a trailer your going to be leaning into a corner so tight that you'll need a swivel mount.

I always figured I would want a swivel mount, but mine too came with a straight ball hitch, so I gave it a try. It was 100% fine, and I would be dragging footpegs on the ground (and yes, you can do that on a GL1500, the ground away acorn nuts on the bottom of my footpegs attest to this) before I reached the angular limit of the ball hitch.

Try the hitch that it came with. If it is not comfortable and safe, then look around. I think that the swivel types are more for cross country work, and that type of work is not suitable for the GW.

Thanks to all who responded. I think I will wait and see how the trailer and bike ride as a unit. I guess I can always add the rotating hitch at a later date. Now if we could just get some warmer weather!! Its 5F now and we are to get 12" of snow tonight/tomorrow.Can't wait for spring!

I also pull a trailer and use a regular 1 7/8" ball hitch. I have not experienced any kind of binding that would indicate I need a swivel hitch.....
Try what you have and see if it's good for you...

I know this is an old thread but because it didn't come up here I'll give you the real reason for the swivel coupler. The hitch is the hitch on the bike. The swivel coupler mounts between the trailer coupler and tongue. The main reason for this item is that if or should I say "when" you drop your bike in the parking lot you won't twist the hitch or trailer tongue. I have also seen a trailer flipped and still going down the road without flipping the bike. Can I say it was a bit of a drag?
