April 23, first ride of the year. Pathetic.

Postby WingAdmin » Wed Apr 23, 2014 10:05 pm

So much has interfered with riding this year...of course, one of the biggest ones was SNOW and general bad weather. I've been away in England for a week and a half, so I decided this evening to finish putting my bike back together and take it out for the first ride of the year.

The good news: All my new rear LED lights work and look great!
The bad news: My front tire pressure sensor hits my brake caliper when the wheel rotates, due to the new long valve stem. My cruise control doesn't work. My reverse doesn't work.

This stuff all worked fine when the bike got put away for the winter! What the hell!

Arghghgh...time to take it all apart again. :(

I had a new rear tire put on my 1500 last month by the Honda dealer. The cruise control was working when I dropped it off, and wasn't later that day when I picked it up. They took it apart and found a relay was bad, somewhere in the vicinity of the area behind the CB. 4 hrs and 250 buck later, I was cruising along (definitely not singing a song!). Good Luck.

I feel your pain. Winter has been too long and they are calling for snow showers again next week up here. So sad... Anyways, it actually got up into the 50's last week so I put my battery back in, checked all the fluids and fired her up. Started nice. but as soon as it warmed up smoke started rolling out from the front by the radiator. It didn't smell electrical, or like any fluids, so I'm thinking stupid mouse nest. We have cats on the farm, but they must of missed one. Now I have to learn how to start pulling panels off to investigate. Such is life... and think warm thoughts. Has to warm up some day.

I had a tire pressure sensor that was whacking on the front brake caliper, I got that fixed tonight.

Messed with the reverse, I actually got it to engage and operate once. Checked the cables and switches, they all check out OK. Next step is to start tearing things apart to get to the various relays etc. - and I haven't got the time right now to do it. I was planning to ride up to Canada this weekend, looks like I'm driving instead. :(

Still haven't had my first ride on the Wing. We actually had snow overnight yesterday morning. All melted but it's really wet again. My rear lane has so many potholes I'll need to trailer it to the street.

I thought you would have had a couple good rides by now scott. I did the moonshine lunch run ( moonshine. il. ) a few weeks ago 1007 miles in two days. Saturday I took I-75 south to ohio, rt. 2 over to rt. 6 into Cleveland. I-71 south to lodi, 224 west to Findlay and finally I-75 north back to Michigan, 420 miles

Unfortunately I simply haven't had time - I've been away (out of the country) almost two out of the last three weeks now, and the rest of my time has been vainly attempting to catch up on what I missed while I was gone.

However, I did have a revelation (I hope) about my cruise control issue the other day. With the LED brakelights I installed, they draw much less power than they used to. The cruise control module is connected to the brake lights, and shuts off (or refuses to engage) if the brake lights are on. I'm thinking that it expects to be pulled low to ground through the brake light filaments, and then watches for +12V to appear which means "hey brakes are on." My suspicion is that my LEDs (and the diodes I have in place to prevent backfeeding my tail light power into the brake system) are restricting the connection to ground enough that the cruise control is not being pulled to ground. I'm going to try sticking a resistor on that line to pull it to ground and see if that fixes it.

Well I was right about the cause of the cruise control not working. I wrote up a small piece about it here, and included a circuit describing how I fixed it:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=21797

My reverse wasn't working thanks to a sticky relay. Got that fixed as well. My bike is now in tip top shape!

that's great news scott but did you go for a ride? I just got in from Frackville, pa about an hour ago. I took off Saturday, got caught in the rain in Toledo and then again about 20 miles outside of Frackville. todays ride was sunny but cool, heated gear was needed. I racked up another 1050 miles

I managed a 20 minute ride, but it was 10:30 pm, so it wasn't a long one. I'm going to ride to work tomorrow!

Same story here, Checked all fluids and air pressure, Front tire is cupping because of a bad valve stem last fall, so I an going to keep an eye on it as the tire is only about 6 k old. Only got about 30 miles in because of the weather. Me thinks that who ever back ordered spring better rethink that policy :)
