This topic was discussed some years ago on Steve Saunder's Gold Wing site - http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/5-g ... stand.html - not sure if it will be much help.

In car parlance, GL usually stood for something like, Grande Lux

People have guessed that it was intended to mean the same as it does in the automotive world, i.e. Grand Luxe. But in truth, the only people who ever knew what GL stood for were at Honda, and they aren't telling.

Personally, I thought "Got Lucky" was better than Grande Luxe.

It puzzles me WingAdmin on why Honda would want to keep that a secret. Because if the conversation from a non rider or someone interested in a Goldwing ever came up about the "G L", I could only shrug my shoulders and say, I dunno. Now that's crazy.

No idea, it doesn't make much sense to me either.

How about:

Giant Lawsuit
Good Luck

Could be they knew it would generate a lot of speculation and conversations about Goldwings and what better way of sparking curiosity and maybe a customer or two, not to mention the free advertising, than word of mouth?

The Japanese don't have a good history when it comes to naming vehicles. Amongst the clangers they have dropped are the Mitsubishi Pajero, - "pejero" meaning "wanker" in Spanish. Then Mazda came up with "Laputa" which (again in Spanish as in "la puta") means the prostitute. Honda nearly released a car called the "Fitta", fortunately, Honda realised in time that the word is an extremely rude one (for ladies' parts) in Sweden and Norway and renamed the car, "Jazz" in Europe and "Fit" in the Americas.

Perhaps Honda decided that "GL" was just a safe, albeit meaningless name.

From my understanding all the GL means is a line designator, it really means nothing.
