Lotsa spam

Postby WingAdmin » Mon Jul 14, 2014 11:28 am

The spammers were keeping me busy this weekend. They would create an account, start posting spam, and I would kill the account and delete their garbage. Within an hour or two, they would create a new account and start all over again.

I had several people send me PM's alerting me to the spam - but the absolute best way to let me know that someone is posting advertising crap on the site is to click the "Report" button. It is at the top of each message, and looks like this:

Report button
Report button

(It appears grey normally like the top one, and lights up red like the bottom one when you put your mouse over it)

This sends me an email directly to me, as well as my phone, so I know right away (even if I'm not currently online) to come kill off the spam.

Thanks!

On another board I am on, they get around the SPAM problem by changing the registration process.

Each person has to send a message to the admin with details of what their bike is and what sort of riding they do, before the admin approves their account and lets them post.

To much work for the spammers, or if they automate it easy to spot.

You might want to think about a similar system.

I thought about that, but with the number of new users I get, I simply don't have the time to approve them one by one - and people would grow tired waiting. The systems I have in place (and there are quite a few) kill off 95% of the spammers, it's the occasional few that get through and cause trouble.

The fact that my anti-spam systems kill a good 95% of them before they ever even post a single message tells you just what a problem forum (and email) spam really is.

It also reflects on the abilities or perseverance of those other 5% spammer types.
"It´s a friggen motorcycle, it´s not supposed to be comfortable, quiet or safe. The wind noise is supposed to hurt your ears, the seat should be hard and riding it should make you s**t your pants every now and then. "
