Postby rono24 » Thu Jul 17, 2014 6:49 pm

JUST RODE 450 MILES FROM SOUTHERN OHIO TO DAVENPORT IOWA,AT 68 YEARS OLD THAT WAS A LONG RIDE . I LOVE THE LONG ROAD TRIPS BUT MAY BE GETTING A LITTLE OLD FOR THEM,BUT I WILL NOT TRAILER THE BIKE. STILL WANT TO RIDE TO STURGIS NEXT YEAR AND MAY BE MY LAST LONG TRIP.

Just keep yourself in the best shape you can, it will do great things to keep your endurance up.

Rono24, those are encouraging words to many of us "youngsters". I've only done a couple of road trips but none with the Mrs. I would certainly ride to Sturgis but the wife just can't go that far, as much as she enjoys riding along. It's good to hear that at 54 I should be able to witness some new scenery for a few years yet... Barring any unforeseen circumstances, and a trustworthy steed.
Thanks for sharing. Ride on!

Not to worry. The hardest thing about getting older with my 'Wing is throwing my leg up over it after riding a long time. I don't use the side stand....maybe that would make it easier.

I actually mount my wing by standing left foot on the foot peg above the side stand and then right leg over.
Don't stand on the right side..it will bring the bike upright.

Might be time to consider a trike conversion!

I am 69 and just got back from Cleveland. It's a 19 hour straight through ride to Venice Fl. Granted I am off the bike once every hour to hour and a half because I am a smoker so that gives me a little break. As I said I am 69, 6'3" and 265lbs. Not the best shape in the world but I do keep active with Habitat for Humanity builds down here.

Made the trip back just fine, actually I think I am ready for another trip. It is lot of fun to take a long trip on the bike with your wife on the back, looking at the scenery, and just enjoying life.

I think about my age all the time when I am riding and sometimes when I am not. So far, so good. One of the reasons that I continue to ride is that the enjoyment continues to outweigh the risks. I have been riding since 1956 and am now 77 years old. Not doing the long hauls, but am limited to some day rides or an occasional overnight. Finally have my '84 Wing running the way that I want it to, which is perfectly. I am still in pretty good shape and have no trouble swinging the leg over. I have used the standing on the left foot peg, but usually don't do that. This bike is so heavy that I cannot get it up on the center stand easily and once up, I can't get it off the stand without the stand skidding on the surface, so just use the side stand.

Here in Virginia, we have a lot of really nice roads that can keep you off of the Interstates and away from the heavy traffic where there are so many overly aggressive, inattentive, cell phone blabbing, texting, jerks. I would take pleasure in wrigging their necks!

Ride safely, my friends, and keep that head on a swivel!

I had my knees replaced 7 years ago so I have to stand on the peg to throw my leg over, works well.i have been rideing for 54 years and not ready to quit yet, besides my wife will not let me quit, she enjoys rideing as much as I do. She is always wanting to take a ride and this wing she loves ,the seat is very comfortable for her. I am not ready for a trike but have thought about it,maybe another couple of years. My wife kept informing me of the drivers that were on their cell phones and the ones that were texting so I was aware, there was quite a few of them. Traffic was pretty light comeing and going,I guess being retired and able to pick your times to ride is nice. Be safe out there and have fun.

I grab the cuff of my pants as I swing my leg over and give it a little help. What I find about getting older is that the bike rally parties where they are noisy till 3 AM three days in a row, leaves me tired and kind of out of it for the ride home. (Note: I am not noisy and partying, but only not getting any sleep) It normally takes me a couple of nights good sleep to be ready for the next round. I can still ride a long ways in a day, but prefer to keep it between 300 and 500 miles. This almost never works, as I usually start fairly early, and I am not ready to stop by 2 PM. Ultimately, I end up between 450 and 700. This is actually too far, at my age, to be sharp and attentive, but that is the way I seem to roll. It ain't about the destination, right? It is all about the ride. I went to a new Motorcycle rally middle of last week - the "Southern Georgian Bay Bike Week" which this year was a ten day affair, and they intend to continue in that vein in the future, and followed it up with the "Ride Manitoulin" run on the weekend. A good time was had by all, and the weather was absolutely wonderful.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

Never admit it! I did a 5500 mile 15 state trip this past July on my 88 1500. Then came home and bought a later model 1500 (99). Took it on a 1100 mile trip down to SoCal and back up the coast on Labor Day weekend. Have a trip to Washington state planned for the end of this month that will be 1500+ miles, weather permitting..... I am 69 going on 70......... I met a young man in San Francisco last spring that had riden his new Harley from Newark, NJ. He said he was 92..........
