Certainly you understand that every part on the bike has a finite lifespan.
It's up to you to determine if its worth the money to replace something that may still have 80% of life left.
I treat the timing belts as a consumable item, just like tires.Water pumps are replaced when they have bad seals or bearings.Use up there life, the replace.
Switches and connectors can just be cleaned.Light bulbs can get dim (black inside) ,,replace them at that time.
Your trying to keep it in good shape, not restore it to new condition.
It's called preventive maintainence.

I will proactively replace critical parts that can leave me stranded - throttle cables, that sort of thing. Otherwise, I let it be until it fails and replace/repair at that time.

Dont get paranoid about these items, just keep an eye, and ear, on the components, and you will be able to tell when something is not quite right. It is then that you need to give it the "tool attention". I have a 1979 Nissan campervan that has still got original components, and that is because I use my eyes and ears to look/hear for problems. It has let me down, once, at the end of a 5000Km (about 3000 miles), 60Km from home. Since then, I just have it serviced because the engine is under the front seat and I have a bad back, so I am limited on what I can do to that vehicle. But I watch when it gets serviced, both to learn and to scrutinise. I have learned to only worry about the 'big stuff' - and then you have to work out what is really big.
