New member but no Gold Wing yet

Postby Corkster52 » Sun Jun 06, 2010 9:41 am

Have finally got the wife to "consider" my getting a motorcycle and the one I have really been longing for is a Gold Wing Airbag model. Sat on m first one yesterday at a dealership and it was sweet. Doing lots of research and price shopping for a "who knows when" purchase.

Thanks

The Goldwing is a great bike. I've had mine triked and still love it. Hope you can find one in your favorite color soon. Until then, continue looking. I still like to visit my local dealerships and check out what they have on the floor. Be safe and congratulations on your choice of motorcycle.

My wife is the one who convinced me to buy our Goldwing. She wanted me to sell my GSX-R750 (which I did) and buy the Wing, so she could ride along. She loves it!

I am looking for an Airbag model, in hopes that will make my wife feel that I am a little less reckless.

Hello, I just got my "Wing" this spring and it is like riding on a cloud. we love it and are looking forward to going on trips with it. You will wonder why you waited so long after you ride yours.

Bought a 4-wheeler a number of years ago against the wishes of my beloved, so, hoping to have learned my lesson, I have been painfully approaching it. Was thinking I was going to have to wait until my daughter, just finishing her sophomore year, graduated from college to get the thumbs up. Trying every way I can to make it happen as quickly as possible.

I purchased a 27yo (1983) Interstate 2 months ago and, after 2,000+ miles, already I've decided this: I will NEVER be without a Goldwing again. I might buy a newer one -- or, maybe not -- I might trike it, but I will always have the option of taking the "auto of motorcycles" out to the highway.
That said, I also like having a 'tooling around' bike! I just sold my Honda 900C Custom for economic and space reasons, but I'd own another. I like the looks of the ol' CX500s, and test-rode a Harley Softail Heritage Classic (c. 1500cc) that was an awfully smooth ride. In short, the model doesn't really matter so much as its ability to haul just me around sportily.
But, a 'Wing has become pretty much non-negotiable.

You guys are giving me such great feedback. If money were not an issue, I would buy one tomorrow. Having a mortgage, car payment and a daughter in college does not leave a lot of loose money to be had, but I am sure I will eventually find a way. $20K for a bike is a big chunk, but I really do like the idea of the airbag model. Any of you guys have an opinion on them? Am I setting my sights too high?

Thanks
Corky

I know how the no money thing works. I got my license about 4 years ago, i got a 1984 honda shadow vt700 for....$100. All i had to do was bleed the clutch cylnder..lol, oh was he mad. I learned on it. My dad had had GW's for a while, he just turned 71 and still loves to ride. Well on a whim i was going to sell the shadow, needed the money, and i actually had someone offer me an 83 aspencade for the shadow. I called my dad to help me look it over.... It was dumped with no engine gaurd. motor was replaced, saddle bad replaced, no radio, faring was cracked, but sounded good, needed brakes. Dad sez you always wanted one, here's your shot... so i traded, repaired almost everything, i even synced the carbs thanks to the forums..WOOT. i took it out a couple days ago for a short ride. not reg yet....OMG asides a little vibration it ran awsome, better than my dad's. i already had someone offer me $1100 for it. i don't know much about bikes but i guess that's good. So just keep options open, never know what comes. my wife loves it, and so do the kids...lol

Unless you absolutely have to have the airbag model, I would look for one a couple years old. Brand new 2010s sell for $25k and up but I've seen 2007s and 2008s in like new condition for $15k. That $10k savings adds up.

On the other end of the spectrum, I bought my '83 Aspencade a couple months ago for $500. I've put another $300 or so in oil, filters, gaskets, and other misc. tune-up stuff and it runs like new. I've already put 3000 miles on it and just today I rode over to Laconia NH for the 87th Classic Bike Week. Another couple hundred miles on the clock. Personally I think I would like to find a nice GL1500, as this six is a little smoother than the four, but I can't afford a GL1800.

Well, if the credit union will give me the money tomorrow, I will be the proud owner of a 1988 GL1500 with a little less than 46,000 miles on her. Found it on craigslist and a great young man is the third owner (his dad and a buddy of his were 2 and 1). It has a couple of bumps and bruises, but a real beauty in my eyes! Thanks for the inspiration from this group. The little missus is not all that thrilled about it, but accepting. Hope to be picking it up within a week or so.

Thanks
Corky

Picked that baby up yesterday and, after hauling it in a trailer for 2 hours from Michigan, getting all of the VIN inspection, title transfer, plates, etc, I was still able to put 165 miles on her before having to leave town for a graduation :( It is one sweet machine! Thanks all of your help guys!
