Took timing belt covers off to paint and yes, I will attempt to change the belts too. The existing belts were made in Mexico ?? What happened to China??

Look closely!

What happened to China??
China is going through a bit of an economic slowdown - perhaps they out sourced to Mexico to get a better price :o

The world is not going to finish today, as it is already tomorrow in Australia and New Zealand, and other islands of foreign nations such as Guam and Samoa.

I use GATES belts. I don't know where they have their belts made these days... they used to make the in the US, but it is possible they're out-sourced to Mexico, China or Cambodia these days. Many US (and I'm sure "other" countries) manufacturers are out-sourcing their manufacturing to places where they can pay the least in labor to get the products made... Many of these sources of cheap labor are also much less environmentally restrictive and don't care what byproducts are dumped as long as palms are greased..

So, Mexican belts... Chinese gaskets... Malaysian whatever.. it's a global economy and you'll never know where some things come from unless you look really close.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

I bought a USAF hat a few years ago. Looking on the inside I saw the tag "Made in Viet Nam"

Could have just used the cheapest belts going, does not say they are Gates, are not Gates a manufacturer who make their own belts.

If at first you don't succeed, hide the evidence.
