Does one really know their true mileage?? Some of these bikes are 30 yrs plus, gone through several owners and the clock could have rolled over numerous times. My new to me 97 gl1500 shows 115000 miles, I don't have a clue what the true mileage is.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but if it's showing 115000 miles, what else could it be?

Oops, let me clarify. It actually shows 11500, and I ran a Carfax report on it which revealed the original owner put 35000 miles on it within the first two years (97-99). Case in point, I have wishful thinking stating it has 115000 having only rolled over once, when in actuality it could have rolled over more than once since these numbers resort to 0, I think.

Higher mathematics has always been my forté. Lol. You're right, that you would have no idea what the real mileage is. For sure it's not 11,500, because Carfax has the original owner at 35,000. So your odometer is reading at least 111,500 miles, maybe 211,500 miles, and on and on.
I think I'd feel good calling it 111,500 if I were you, probably a pretty safe bet, and you'll feel better.
I've got a '78 Wing that I've had since new, and it reads 72,886 kms., but I know for a fact that it's 672,886 kms.
Just take good care of it, be gentle with it, ride it often, and enjoy it always!

Ride safe................................Dave

I found about 7 remnants of mudd dobbers/wasp nests hidden throughout the bike while I was taking off some of the plastics just to go through and check everything out. Hopefully this is a sign that the bike sat for a while which could mean lower mileage but then again, wishful thinking :D

I just looked at the odometer on my '96, 79,440. Pretty sure it's an actual 79k and not the 1,079,440 it'd be if it rolled over. Unless they went to a 5 digit odo in '97?

A lot of motorcycles just sit. Some are fortunate to sit in fairly temperature and humidity controlled garages... others sit in barns. A few years ago, I bought a 1981 GL500 with 5400 miles on it... two years ago, I bought a 1981 Virago with 9600 miles on it... they're out there, if you look for them.

I'm amazed at the mileage some think is "high" for a year. Last year, I put about 30,000 miles on two (combined) motorcycles. I'm probably on track to do 35,000 this year. Most of my mileage is commuting and riding around town. Many others "tour" only, and really don't put miles on their bikes unless there's a trip involved. A co-worker and his group of friends rarely ride unless they've got a planned trip...something beyond my comprehension, but when they "go" somewhere, they put 2-3,000 miles in. They rode to Canada and back two weeks ago (four or five riders in the group) on vacation, and it seems like that's what they like. I don't care to ride with anyone else... it's just a personal preference.

So, when I read of or hear of an old motorcycle with what seems like really low miles for the age, it doesn't surprise me and I don't get real suspicious unless it really looks like hell... and even that can be deceiving as the bike may have sat outside...
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

I'm the fourth owner of my '88. Bought her with 50,744 March 3rd of this year. She has 56,305 as of today. Doesn't sound like much compared to others but my commute is 10 miles a day round trip. I ride 7 days a week. Even with my little commute I manage to average 265 miles a week.
My 2014 KTM 500 has 4100 and has done a lot of sitting since I bought the wing.

No doubt on it being the bike. Obviously then, you haven't had the rain that we have had in Dunnellon. I have gotten to ride one day in the last two weeks, and that was to get a haircut. A whooping 6 miles! before that, it was to watch the radar and slip in between the storms. Normally I get in at least 400 miles a week. Glad I live at the Ark. :D Wonder where I got swapped out on this post??? Can't even find the post that I was replying to??

Mine is a 1986 GL1200, with 52000 miles, so still quite new! And it cost the huge sum of $4500 NZ, so an absolute steal which my wife loves to bits.

purchased my 03 Goldwing (trike) in April. Believe it or not, it only had 953 miles on it. The story I was told is that the original owner lost his permit shortly after buying it and it had been in storage for 12 years. The dealer I got it from picked it up from him and did the trike conversion. It now has 2300+/- miles on it, mostly riding with Christian Motorcyclist Association. I have had some issues with sticky electric switches (probably from sitting up so long) and a warranty issue with the trike conversion which was taken care of. Looking forward to many years of riding this beast!

Mine has 278xxx Kms (about 173 750 miles), is a 1997 Aspencade and is running very well, but I have found it can get tired when I stop. More parking lot practice required, the only trouble is that the nearest parking lot if 35 Kms, hang on, that is not a trouble! 8-)

Here's a shot of the speedo the seller took of it when he placed the advert, when I went to look at and later picked up this current wing in Nov, 07 (end of riding season up here)

This is what it has on it as of 2 days ago .....

cell phone shot of it a couple of weeks ago ...
