Website layout

Postby Sidcar » Sun Feb 15, 2015 4:16 pm

The layout of this website, as seen on my iPad, has altered drastically.
Everything is bigger, the fonts are so big they use up two lines instead of one and the header "Goldwing Docs" overlays the picture of the silver Goldwing which in turn obscures the search box. Any ideas?
There was an iPad update a few days ago could it be that? If so what, if any thing can I do about it.
The other websites I visit are fine.

This new version of software is "responsive" in that it's supposed to automatically adjust for tablets, phones, and so on. Everything I've tried it on so far, it has worked well. Can you please post the models/types of phones/tablets that you're running that are having the issues?

The layout is fine for me using Dolphin and Boat browsers on Android 4.4.3 (HTC One M7). A lot better than before. Now just to get the boards available for Tapatalk ;)

That's correct - the responsive version of the site deletes the picture of the bike in the top left corner, and shows just the logo over the white GL1800 instead.

The menu is NOT responsive, as that's something I wrote, and it's not part of the new forum software, but I'm working on changing that over to a responsive system now so that it will change correctly when shown on phones.

The forum and topic lists change also, showing less information on the phone, but it should show the full posts (although with less information about the posters).

I'm liking the boards a lot better for mobile now. Thanks for the update. One suggestion for the next, though. Tapatalk has a plugin for phpBB. Simple installation if you already have Automod installed. Tapatalk makes forum browsing on mobile a joy.

It will get better as I do more work to finish the menu rewrite, then start redoing the rest of the site to work with the responsive styles as well. I have a limited amount of time, but we'll get there. :)

I would love to use Tapatalk. There's one huge problem, however: the forum has advertising on it, which (usually) pays for the cost to run the site. Moving users to Tapatalk means Tapatalk makes advertising revenue from the site...but I would not. They have "monetization" programs for forum owners, but every time I investigate it, the forum owners that have used it complain that they never see a cent from thousands of clicks. That is bad, the site would become financially unsustainable. In addition, the Tapatalk dumbs the site down to JUST the forum, the rest of the site would not appear at all.

Once I get the web part of the site set how I want it, I've thought of developing my own mobile app that will present a better mobile experience. It's a plan I've had for a while.

Everything works/looks great on my Wally World Straight Talk LG phone with some kind of Android thingy.

I'm all for improvement but tapatalk doesn't sound like an improvement. :(

Tapatalk is definitely not an option. It is a commercial app that allows you to read and post in forums, but it puts their own ads on top of it, so they are making money off of your forum - and the forum owner gets almost nothing. The forum owner also has to provide the entire contents of the user email database so that they can use it to spam the forum users. That will NEVER happen.

I have a long-term project ongoing wherein the website is being redesigned to be responsive, i.e. work well with mobile platforms. That's the extent of the planning at this point.

Thanks WA... Never used Tapatalk so its interesting to hear how that works. Good luck with the mobile work. I don't know what you platform representation is like but I find my access being primarily on a tablet... Tablets seem to be doing to laptops, what laptops did to desktops...
