who rides at night?

Postby f1xrupr » Fri Mar 20, 2015 8:21 pm

Just got back from a little spin while my wife took a little nap-she has 3 more nights, then she starts her new day job. I usually don't ride at night unless it's windy and deer are not moving. I guess I just couldn't stand it any more, and figured a slow little putt around the country block might be safe enough....oh...I don't know... :roll:

I ride at night quite often. Not that I want to, but because I didn't get done what I wanted while it was daylight. Night time riding takes on a whole new perspective in how you ride. Stay in the tire tracks of the cager in front of you, and watch underneath that vehicle to make sure there is nothing in the road. If those vehicals swerve, then you had better be looking to see what caused that. Sides of the road are another worry. I would rather slow down and let them get way ahead of me so I can use high beams. Oncomming traffic is another thing. That is how I got caught with the grass pile in the road. (caused my wreck) :( Got to look twice as hard when meeting a car or truck. Look more at the side line to stay on the road, and then back to high alert once they have passed. etc etc etc.... Just be extra careful.
Ride safe, and smart. Asphalt is like #1 grit sandpaper. Dave

I sometimes ride at night, but around here one has to be very careful, not of the other vehicles, but for animals. we have a lot of raccoons, possums, skunks, deer, and an occasional horse or cow might find their way into the roadways from all the farm land around my area, otherwise I don't mind riding at night. for some reason it seems more peaceful and quiet. nothing like riding in a large city where you have vehicles, pedestrians, cats, dogs, and bicyclists.

I enjoy riding at night. When I leave for my yearly trip from S.W. Florida to Cleveland I like to leave around 2:00AM. Less traffic to worry about. Plus being down here in Fla. it's a little cooler.

In the summer, I would suggest carrying a plastic container with your favorite windshield cleaner as the bugs will invade your vision on the shield,, Also watch out for stuff that falls off the interstate, vehicles that carry Duct work,, almost bit the bullet in Littlerock Ark. in 1987 because someone dropped some duct work pieces on the Hwy. My left foot hit it but just barely.. SOB... freaked me out man.. doing about 70...Someone was looking after me... :shock: On my 750 Kawa...LTD

I do love riding at night. New things to see and requires more alertness on my part. But, anytime I can ride it is good, as I am sure with all of the rest of us.

I used to love riding at night. As years passed and my eyes became more sensitive to light I slowed that until about stopped. Three years ago, I was riding south to Tennessee from Detroit and daytime heat was so bad I started holing up in air conditioned motels during the afternoon, and riding at night again. Much more dangerous, but very enjoyable. As mentioned above, much more care is required, but it is so much more peaceful. Out of the heat, I have reverted back to daytime riding :lol:
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

lol, all YOU have to worry about is if any "alligators" are crossing the roads down in S.W. Florida. do you ride thru "alligator alley" on your way north?

We dont get deer, bears, racoons, elephants, or lions, but we do get:
    Wombats (that always insist on walking down the middle of a lane);
    Goats (that think that they can cross the road at any time - I think they learned that from the deer);
    Camels (who are usually smoking some kind of weed);
    Cattle (that like to lay down in the middle of the road at night to absorb the heat);
    Kangaroos (who hide behind the bushes until you are right on them, and then leap out with "surprise"!); and,
    Koalas (that believe they are a protected species so do not have to worry about vehicles on the road).

This makes for interesting driving/riding at night in the countryside, but I usually like driving at night, but not so much riding at night. More headlights mean I can see more.

It can be an experience, driving at night. But, although I have encountered all of these at some time, I have only actually hit two kangaroos. They do make a mess of the front, though. And a couple of times I have made a mess :o :oops:

Back in the 80's (my XS1100 days) I road a long deserted desert road at night, daytime rides were just to hot.
Without the moon the stars seemed extra bright, I wondered what it would be like riding with the lights off...CLICK, WHOA, was it ever different!
A little ditty I dreamed up about night riding.

Peering out my window what do I see
moonless glittered sky of stars sea to sea

Air is calm but the Wing wants to fly
crisp is the air yet my urge is high

I dress the part and begin my start
into the dark wow this night is stark

From inside to out eyes slowly adjust
stars casting shadows I have implied trust

Exit city, enter barren stretches of road
it's just me and my Wing eases the mental load

Ride'n slow watching for slightest of movement
my headlight tunnels my view of the pavement

Do I dare turn off the glare of my forward view
ride'n without headlights WHOA this is something new

Adjusted eyes sees eerie shapes with quirky hues
eyes wide open scanning this twilight zone of view

Seems like unfamiliar roads as shadows wiz by
so well do I know these roads I'm relaxed and sigh

Mirrored eyes glare back I must keep highly alert
for there slightest movement a hazard to divert

A nights cruise without a bruise I begin to snooze
turning around with a frown I head back to town

In bed dozing off wearing a huge grin
dreaming of new places where I have been

* Ride'n without the moon
* Ride'n with no moon
* No moon night ride
* No moon ride
* Moonless ride
* Darkside ride
* No moon ride tonight

I ride a lot at night around home, or while out on tour and it's all in rural/wooded areas

Secret is to stay focused and to have a good set of aux driving lamps set up high and wide spread so they throw the beam of light far down the road to light up the edges of the road.
When I hit my High Beams and have my aux DLs on, the road signs a mile down the road light up so bright they become a bit of a distraction! :mrgreen:

BTW .... you want to be looking over your windshield, not through it. That way bugs, oncoming lights and rain collecting on the shield doesn't impede your vision! ... just sayin!!

We ride a lot at night. It is enjoyable with a few exceptions. We live in white-tail country so anytime is deer-thirty. We slow down at night because I refuse to out-drive my headlights. A Harley guy down the road gets the vapors when I talk about our night-rides, but I explain that we have a lot more light out front than he does. It just requires driving for conditions. On 395 coming up from Spokane, we will spend a lot of time on the shoulder letting the cagers pass us. I do not like their headlights in my mirrors, and they are interested in traveling faster than I want to run.

The only time we have hit a deer we got the bike past him and smacked him with the trailer. It was 9:30 am on a nice sunny morning. I got off the bike and walked back to see how bad he was, but he decided he didn't want anything to do with the guy on that dang motorcycle. He jumped up and ran into the field. I'm hoping he passed the word to the others that it is a good idea to stay off the pavement!

Lots of Muleys in that area as well as moose up around the Disautel Pass area of 155!
I had to come to a full stop early one morning while headed south for a cow and her calf. She slowly ambled down the road and I followed her for a good half mile with my 4 ways on before she spotted a good spot to lead her young'un off the road, except that farmers wire fence she easily stepped over stopped that poor calf at a dead trot not once, but twice!

I enjoy night riding but dont do it as much as I'd like. Between critters and cagers its a different flavor of riding. When I commute to work in the early morning its also different. Still many critters but the cagers are in a huge hurry to get to work. Yes enjoy riding at night but its a different mindset.
