What would you do with an old refrigerator

Postby Honda Hobo » Sat Apr 11, 2015 11:07 pm

What would you do with an old refrigerator? Here is what I did. I built a comping trailer. The freezing compartment became a cooler, and the refrigerator became the storage for sleeping bags, tent, and other misc camping gear. Pics attached.

Hi, Fridge about 85# frame 80# and wheels, tires and hubs probably 40#, so I'm guessing about 200 pounds, but I do intend on taking it to a scale to find out for sure. It does pull really easy.

Thanks,,, the refrigerator is only a 12 cu ft. and I gutted it, so it didn't end up weighing much after the compressor and such was removed.

Hi,,,Well, actually I was looking for an old round top refrigerator, but it seems the people that have them for sale have the thought that they own the winning lottery ticket. So when this 12 cu ft showed up, I used it. Thanks for the kind words.

Now that's cool...I can't make out the name brand on the fridge-it must have a name right? That might make a fun thread..." what make is this trailer?" ...hmmmmmm....thurmacruze manufacturing.

LOL,,,, actually its a White-Westinghouse, but the name tag is going to be covered up by another tag, "Hobo" when the people get done with the graphics. I'm trying to decide what to put on the back, photos attached.
Just examples or put something patriotic? Any suggestions?

I don't know either, but one of these days I'll find what I want to put on the back. I know it draws a lot of attention. People just have to walk around it and look it over in bewonderment. Those are good names you came up with, another is "Hekifiknow"... or how about "Electrictfree" ? Have a great day, Lets Ride.

I have an old round top that I have used as a beer cooler for 47 years. It was old when I got it and still works great. I put a tapper in the door, and there has been "several gallons" through it over the years. Its an old Westinghouse. Wish one of the newer ones would last like this one has. :D

Hello, It sounds like you made really good use of your old refrigerator, and I agree, the old ones run lots longer than the newer models. This one is a mid 1990's model and has been worked on a lot. I think the manufacturer's want products to fail so people will buy a new one. There was a time when a refrigerator was considered a once in a life time investment. I don't think this one will ever stand in a kitchen again, but it's life span as a trailer may be longer than it was a refrigerator. Pour slowly, Ride Safely

I was given this one in 1969 because I was the only one in the group that had a pick up that would haul it. It was headed to the dump, but when they said it works I told them to bring it to me. Best we could figure out, it was about 19 years old at that time. Amazing some of the stuff that gets thrown out because it looks old... Think Goldwing. :o They run like this fridge. :D

Your old round top has some great family history, if it ever quits running, repair it and keep it, It's got some great memories in it. I have a long way to go to say my 1500 to has a lot of miles on it. It's a 93 and only has 27,000 on it. But as of tomorrow I will be unemployed, retired except for building a few trike conversions, and I'm going to put some miles behind me.

An interesting conversion process. I can't help but snicker though because to me it looks very much like a coffin.

LOL,,, It would be a short coffin, but plenty of arm and shoulder room. It pulls easy and has a large freezer which is now the cooler, so I'm all set for a fishing trip. Also has plenty of water tight room for my tent, chairs, clothes and camping equipment. So, eat your heart out,,,I'm going fishing...LOL
