Fishy or no?

Postby ankgrays » Fri Apr 17, 2015 9:33 pm

I'm looking at an '81 GL 1100 I with 42 k miles. Guy says it wont turn over...just clicks. Says he put a new starter on it,
and says the battery is good.

Pretty sure I can figure that out with help from you guys.

He says he bought it from another guy about 4 weeks ago. He said that the guy that he bought it from, said it ran a couple of months ago.

He says he has the title, but never put it in his name yet.

Doesn't have the time to go title it.

I need you guys input on the title thing...would you buy it if the price was right or no?

First off, I would want to see the receipt made out by the original owner, and the original owner's contact details, just so that you can verify the legitimacy of the title. As he has purchased a 'broken' GW, then he should not be expecting to make a profit on it, as it is not running. Perhaps let the new owner know that you only need a "parts bike", but you want to make sure that the engine works.

Secondly, I would be trying a new battery on it, as the new seller will tell you anything to get it out of his way, and this could be the way to ease it out of his clutches.

If you are looking at a 4 cylinder GW, then have a chat with Made2Care, as he has one for sale, that he has spent some time getting it "just right"!

That guy trying to sell you this bike is lazy, he should have the title in his name a month later so he can write a bill of sale to the next guy,, He can't write a bill of sale to you, he doesn't own it, unless he has a written bill of sale from the original owner.... He is making things complicated for himself...and also for the guy trying to buy the bike... I always title my purchases right away.. What's he going to try now, write you a bill of sale with his name on it? Nope... Has to be from the actual owner of the title...I'd throw a rock at this guy...

Is that the bike on the Des Moines Craigslist for $675? Not a bad looking bike. I'd give it serious consideration if the title issues works out OK.

Yup...same bike. I've only talked to him on the phone so far. Going to try to look at it next week sometime, and get more info.

On another note : The DMRAA hamfest is tomorrow for you ham types. See you there?

As far as the no-start/just clicks issue is concern, it could be as simple as a sticky solenoid (easy & cheap to fix), a weak battery (still pretty easy), bad starter motor brushes (a PITA to change out, but cheap as dirt for the parts), or a dirty start switch (in which case, turning it on/off/start a hundred times or so will probably get it going again).

Hope that helps...

On a cautionary note, it might be worth considering doing a lien search before laying down your money. I just bought a car a couple of weeks ago, and I thought the guy seemed a little...sketchy. Search came up clear, so all was okay (the seller was just a little odd, is all), but that search made me feel a lot better.

I did the lien search online. All I needed was the VIN number & $20. Great insurance, particularly if the current owner(?) is reluctant to do any paperwork - in the category of things that make you go "Hmmmm." It would be tragic to buy it, go to title it, and find out that some previous owner had borrowed money on & and absconded on the debt - you'd be stuck with the bill or lose the bike.

Just a thought...

Yep, Skier, that's the bike.

As far as finding out if its stolen or ???...my job enables me to check that REAL easy.

If the engine is locked up, the starter will "just click".

Nope, I didn't buy it. Hmmmm...I think I'll still call him next week to see if I can look at it.

He did say he had a couple of other calls, so he might have sold it.

I wondered if the engine might be hydro locked.

I'll keep you posted.

Maybe somebody on here bought it?

Littlebeaver nailed it...I called the county treasurer. They said it has to be in his name...for at least 30 days before another title change can happen.

I called him again early this eve./late afternoon, and he said someone had picked it up this past weekend.

He had told me that he was busy this past weekend and I wouldn't be able to see it then...maybe Mon., or Tues.

So he's lazy AND a fibber too...

See my sig line.

How true...prob. made the wifey happier too...

I'll just spend the $$ saved on that, and use it on the current bike, or the '68 VW Convert. Bug I bought.

I get enough hassles in life with my job...don't need no mo, yo.
