Space shuttle museum

Postby 702scottc » Sun May 10, 2015 10:21 am

I'm taking my daughter on a ride next weekend to Los Angeles to see the space shuttle Endeavor at the California science museum. I know they have a few of these on display around the country. Has anyone seen one? Curious what to expect. I have never seen one up close. We used to ride out to North Edwards AFB in the early 80's and watch them land but the viewing area was pretty far, I was just a 19 yr old kid and I loved watching it land..
Now my youngest is attending UNLV and is in the physics program, she loves this stuff as much as I do, thank the Lord!

I lived in Kissimmee FL when the shuttle program was active. I got VERY lucky one day when they had to stop the Space Center tour bus to let one go in front of us on the crawler on it's way to the launch pad. SPECTACULAR!!!
I think you will be most surprised at how small it is. When every cubic inch and every ounce counts, NASA knows how to conserve both.

That sounds like a neat experience. I've seen photo's of it on the 747' guess they flew it around Los Angeles before they landed and moved the shuttle
To the museum. Would have loved to have seen that! I guess it's about as large as a medium sized airliner. Still worth seeing. Couldn't be too big, takes a lot of energy to get off the ground. Kinda like our Goldwings, takes a lot of juice to get them going! Lol.

I took my son to Washington DC last summer, and we saw Discovery at the Smithsonian annex at Dulles. It is...extremely huge. The thought of boosting this thing to hypersonic speeds going straight up, in order to achieve orbit, requires power that my mind cannot even comprehend.

That's a neat picture of you and your son, thanks for sharing. Bet he'll remember that experience all his life. I still remember sitting in front of our tv at my mom and dads watching Neil Armstrong walk on the moon, seems like yesterday, I was almost 7 yrs old.
I hope to one day be able to visit the Smithsonian, what a wonderful place!

Follow up,

My daughter and I had a wonderful time visiting the museum. The space shuttle is just awesome! It's huge! The amount of energy it took to get that beast into orbit is staggering! I would urge anyone who hasn't seen one to make it a point.

702Scottc,

I hope your daughter enjoyed the ride to and from also. The shuttles were awesome vehicles.

I thought I'd share my picture of me with my son in front of Discovery, at the Dulles Annex of the Smithsonian last summer:

It really is unbelievably huge!
