What's the best oil for an old 'Wing?

Postby GT-Austin » Sun Jun 27, 2010 6:56 pm

Live in Central Texas, & I've rebuilt an '81 Gl1100, Very hot area. Have recently put in Castrol High-Mileage 10W-40, But it seems to put off alot more heat. Any suggestions?

Really? The different oil causes it to put off more heat? If you switch back to the old oil you were using, does it change back and put out less heat?

That's the first I've ever heard of that happening.

I will stick with what has been used on my old 28 year old machine according to the previous owner. Very little oiled used between changes as far as I can tell.( Valvoline 10W-40 ) I remember when I worked in the labs at two different 4 cycle manufactures of engines, the engineers said small air cooled engines will use more oil in multiviscosity oil's then one straight weight oil.Pertains to Water cooled too. I have never read the test results to this claim, but I do still read most engines run in warm climates use a straight weight oil. Stick to what the Manufactures owners book says to do, each engine after many a hour testing by a Manufacture comes up with with the best spects...remember these engines have wet clutches, and need protection too.

A lot of folks use 20/50 in the summer months especially in a relatively hot climate like Austin. I use Castrol 20/50 here in OKC in both my bikes and the engines run quieter and shift smoother. No opinion on running hotter???

I use Valvoline 10W40 motorcycle oil in my GL1100. I'm in Ohio, and this oil works great - and I ride from 95 degrees down to just above freezing.
