Hello From Just North of Tampa

Postby AdvenJack » Fri May 29, 2015 4:27 pm

Hi Everyone!

I hope to join the ranks of GL 1800 Level 4 Airbag model owners
this summer. The wife is very apprehensive about M/C's though,
specifically collisions and fall-downs. She's 51 and has virtually NO
M/C experience. I am 55 and rode a H-D Super Glide in my 20's.
I intend to propose the idea to her in a few days, that for Father's
Day I want to take the Florida mandated rider safety class to get
my M/C endorsement. Any ideas to make my wife less fearful are
appreciated very much. :)

Thank you,

After years of fear being spoken and ingrained in women about motorcycles, it takes some doing to reverse it.
My wife's mother is literally afraid of almost everything and her subliminal training took it's tole.

It took great amount of explaining, pleading, and encouragement to get mine onboard.

After a while she loved riding but leaning still make her apprehensive, and of course the selfish distracted cage drivers do too.

It can be done, but this fear in a women is hard to overcome.

Practice, practice, practice. Do I need to remind you, to practice? Why not do the course, first, then find out if you still like motorcycling (without the noise of a V-twin). Take the new machine to a large car park, and practice figure 8s using cones, trolleys, buckets or whatever, so that you get your slow-speed handling up to scratch. Then when you have good confidence, go for some rides. Once you have these under your belt, you can then try the same with your passenger. Demonstrate the figure 8s to her, then you can get her to go for a ride.

When I have a passenger, I tell them to keep seated throughout the whole performance; do not move around in corners; dont lean in corners. If you follow those rules, you should both feel confident. Do you have an intercom? If so, get some soothing music, and play that while you are out and about the first time. Wife happy, life happy.

Enjoy this site, there is lots of experience and knowledge, and they are willing to share.
