(Almost) Puzzled in Pennsylvania

Postby Flyboy6 » Tue Jun 09, 2015 11:17 am

Just back from a 2,000 mile round trip from Toronto to Louisville Kentucky, on the 1983 Aspencade I bought in the fall and have been tinkering with ever since, guided by all of you.

A great outing, love the back highways through West Virginia and Pennsylvania, and other than one episode of overheating when stuck in a traffic jam in Louisville, everything went beautifully.

In fact, yesterday morning, while on a back highway somewhere just west of the Allegheny forest, I crested over a hill, and below me was a beautiful valley, clean open road, disappearing in a gentle curve over the next hill. I rode down hill feeling like everything was very beautiful, I love motorcycles, God is good, and what a great day. Then the engine just stopped. No drama, no bang, no puff of smoke, and I just coasted to a gentle halt at the bottom, and pulled off onto the shoulder. Lots of fuel, temperature was good, all of the wires in place, battery fully charged. My only thought was that something fundamental inside the ignition system had chosen that moment to disintegrate, and I was truly stuck.

As I mulled over how complicated it was going to be to get a tow truck out into the wilderness, then get my sorry butt home again, I glanced down and saw the obvious – I had apparently flexed my throttle hand to uncramp at, and flipped the Killswitch. Duh. Bike fired right up, and ran like a Swiss watch all the rest of the way home. How embarrassing would that have been, to have a tow truck driver point this out to me?

All is good. Except my back is telling me that I am now 55, and not 25 anymore.

Ride safely.

When I moved to PA from NJ about 10 years ago, I returned to my old home to get mike bike. I was on a Silverwing at the time. My wife was driving me down, then following me back. I did the same thing! I was on the interstate 70mph and the bike shut off. I coasted off the road to see what happened. I noticed I hit the kill switch as well. The worst part was hearing about it from my wife! Those switches sure do work! Anyway thought I would share so you know that you are not the only one.

Safe riding

Oh, I had one - in fact I had just found it and installed it a few days before I left. Would have been snookered without it! That and the highway pegs let me stretch out and keep from getting too knotted up.
