Hi everybody,
Thank you very much........
In 1978 I purchased the K1 as the 2nd owner with 10.000 mls on the odo......my age was 35 years that time.
Up till 1983 I drove it about 1000 mls and since then (during an uninterrupted period of 31 years) it was layed off / stored in my garage.
In 1974 (my age was increased to 71 years old) I decided to drive it again.........it was in a remarkable good condition however as a result of the 31 years inactivity it was absolute necessary to check really everything and partly restore things as brakes, the frame, tank, muffler, etc, etc.
It turned out to become some kind of restauration, I dismantled the K1 completely (except engine plus transmission itself).
The complete candy blue green panel/body paint is 100% original...... everywhere, except at the front sides of the radiator shrouds wich I gave a repaint due to minor chipping/corrosion.
The frame beeing in a 100% condition was resprayed and injected with about 1 lbs of liquid corrosion protective, the (sub)frame turned 360 degr. in two directions covering the inside completely.
The engine was repainted, all aluminium parts (incl. the hubs, which were respoked with SS spokes) were sandblasted and covered with 2-3 layers two-component clear paint.
Everything (except sandblasting and final outlining of the wheels) was done by myself........taking approx. 800 real working hours (incl the nights) and approx. 400 hours of investigation/searching on the internet, parts-ordering et.
The complete cost of replacements parts (all OEM), a gigantic amount of both aerosol-can paint and brakecleaner, etc. and a set of tires was approx. $ 4000,-
I trust that once my son (45 years old) will drive it......

Beautiful. Well done, rudolph. Are the intake runners, timing belt and valve covers painted or blasted? I can't tell from the pics.

Hi Spiralout,

Thank you sir........
These parts as well a the hubs, forks, carb vac. caps are light glasscorn-blasted ("touched") and slightly/moderately polished by a local specialist.
http://www.polijstwerk.nl/index.php?opt ... e&Itemid=1
Then 2-3 layers of rattle-can 2 component clear coat were applied; this gave a very nice "deep" view of the surface of the parts; this can not been seen so well in the pic's,
I tried to achieve/maintain the original OEM-K1 look/effect on all these parts and did not choose to polish them mirrorlike etc.
The paint of the cardan was in excellent condition and did not have to be renewed, conserving its "typical" kind of "silverish" OEM-color.
The painted left side of the rearhub was refreshed by a alu/silver repaint and clearcoated.

The frame coating.......out- and inside...........

The carb's and level testing.............

The closed/filled cooling system was tested (at 1.15 bar by means of a car tire valve and tire pressure gauge for monitoring; see picture) ) in a stand-alone setup to prevent eventual leaking elimination of the system when it would been sitting in the frame already........and yes it leaked a little, so the cure was easy......

After 32 years of inactivity, at 5 o'clock in the morning the engine started for the first time again within 4 seconds .....pure euphoria.....

That's a gorgeous finish on those parts. Absolutely stunning carbs. This should make BotM at NGW, easily. Couple of questions. Are those repro spring clips on the carb air tubes or originals and why did you decide to go with SS hex screws on the carbs when everything else is so close to original? Small detail, I know, but they kind of grabbed my attention.

Hi,
The spring clips on the carb air tubes are original............
Yes, the SS hex screws, eeehhhh... :? ...well, eeehhh.... ...I simply liked them.......my aim was to keep the bike as original as possible.........however not at any price.......I allowed myself some personal preferences.
I saved all original parts. screws etc. and can bring the K1 back to 100% original within a couple of hours........... :)
......."This should make BotM at NGW, easily"............I don't think so.....I have the impression that they tend towards nice/special modified bikes.........I obviously was not preferred already for this month's BotM......no problem.

I don't know much about them but while riding my CB750 I'd always say "I should have bought that" as they whizzed by.
Quite, fast and cool. 8-)

Well, my same color 75 is finished except for the carbs which I just got back from Pistol Petes and need to get them on the bike. BUT, I will now be ashamed to post my pics. That my friend is a complete perfect restoration. Mine, I can no longer call a restoration, just maybe a quick get it ready for the road job. Although I replaced may parts that deal with safety and ride ability, I did not spend the time, or effort to go into such detail.

Yea, I will put some up as soon as I get it back. Took the carbs over to the mech. today, but now, I realized neither of us pulled the gas tank and cleaned it, so I won't fire it up until I do that . Now that means tearing half the bike back apart, when i had everything off the frame and painted it a few months ago. Brain dead seems to be my mode here this last year. I can't say it is alzheimer's, cuz I remember all the dumb a$$ things I do. Just don't know why I don't think anymore. The mech thought I took care of the tank while I had the frame at my place. I thought he understood I wanted him to finish the unfinished job, which he did except for the tank. But it will be a couple weeks before he can get to it, so I left it there for him to do. Just told him don't fire it up until he has taken care of the tank.

Last Novenber, unexpectedly (and not initiated by myself) my restored 1975 GL1000 K1 suddenly was selected as Bike Of The Month November 2015 at the "naked Goldwing" NGW.com-forum.
Consequently early this month there was a Bike Of The Year 2015 contest between the 12 nominated BOTM's......
Again unexpectedly my K1 was elected as BOTY 2015 with 29% of the votes (13% for 2nd place)..........
I am very happy with it and herewith submit some info for those people that do/did not visit the NGW.com forum.
Best regards, Ruud

The nominated picture......
