Do helmets have an expiration date?

Postby ankgrays » Sat Sep 19, 2015 6:21 pm

Went to an estate sale today, and found a used helmet for a good price.

Needs a couple of new cheek pieces, but in great shape except for that.

"Born on" date is Feb. of 2000.

Usually I would pass on a used helmet, except this one looked "too good to be true".

Yeah...I know the saying, but it was an full coverage ARAI Signet-GT...

For $10.

Still good or throw?

Inspect it very closely to make sure the EPS liner isn't coming apart. Snell recommends replacing helmets after 5yrs. But there are so many variables that can come into play. For $10 maybe it might be a decent 2nd helmet. Why do you have to replace the cheekpads? That may be an indicator about if the helmet is still any good.

For $10 I thought it would be OK as a second helmet as I don't have a full coverage one now, only open face.

Cheek pads don't HAVE to be replaced...just kinda dirty looking.

I DO need a plastic/rubber no fog nose cover thingy though....it's missing.

Helmets do expire after about 5 years. The hard 'foam' that protects your noggin dries out and will crack on impact. Better to be safe than sorry! ;)

The manufacturers and retailers are in cahoots too.
I tried to find a replacement faceshield for my Shoei RF1000, which is well north of 5+ years old.

They simply don't stock them, won't/can't get NOS AND the fastening/hinge method changes so you can't put a newer shield on an older helmet even if it carries the same model#.
When all else fails, RTFM!

The official line from helmet manufacturers is that they should be replaced 5 years after the date that they are first worn.

So does that apply here? I don't know. I think I would think twice about a ten-year-old helmet, even a super steal like that. That said, I'm pretty fastidious and uncompromising when it comes to my helmets.

is there a "manufacture's date" somewhere inside the helmet to let you know when it was made?

Yes they do.
Do I replace mine? Unless I've dropped it, I don't.
After 10 years I'll start looking.
Everything has an expiration. Except twinkies and fruit cake.

You're right. I don't see an expiration date nor a manufactured date. I guess you have to remember when it was purchased and go that route.
I suppose you have to add helmets to twinkies and fruit cakes not having a date on them.

According to NHTSA all helmets are supposed to have a date of manufacture.
Manufacturers are required under FMVSS 218 to place a label on or inside the helmet stating the manufacturer’s name, model, size, month and year of manufacture, construction materials, and owner’s information.

If you can't find the date of manufacture on the inner top of the helmet or stamped on the chin strap then I doubt your helmet is legal. It is stamped on the chin strap of an old Arai from 2002 that I have as well as an Arai RXQ that I now wear.

http://www.nhtsa.gov/Safety/Motorcycles

As to age of a helmet, It is your head and not mine so you decide. But from your description of the cheek pads, that helmet has seen a lot of use, possibly a lot of sweat, and even knowing you can easily pull that stuff and wash it, I just prefer my own helmet.

I just check mine and none of my HJC's have anything but the sizes on them.
HJC is a repretable company even tho they are made in Korea. I can't see them being omitted from them.
I'll keep looking tho.

hummmm....
SOME HEADS are so worthy one simply can not put a price on it.
And there are those heads that are best used as an echo chamber or a surveyors sighting tool.

When your time is up the MOST EXPENSIVE helmet ever made, will not save you.
So $0.00 to $BAZILLI.ON helmet is irrelevant.

I will continue to use my helmet until the moon don't shine.
 woops, that was last night... Super Moon Lunar Eclipse.

Glad I bought 2 new beanie helmets 6 years ago as backup replacements.
YA-ya, there still in their original boxes and sealed baggies.

They fit Harvey.
Like I said, the helmets are in a sealed plastic bag, one that is loose enough that we can still put on our heads. Since I was rearranging the bike parts self, I handed her hers to try on, so we tried them on just a few weeks ago.

IF anything we're at the age of head shrinkage, not swelling. A beanie cap will snug them right up if necessary. ;)

i remember when i bought my first brand new bike back in 1982. i was at the honda dealership and i was trying on a bunch of different helmets until i found one that was comfortable to wear. a nice red and black striped Bell open faced helmet. actually, it matched the colors of my bike. my hair was down to my shoulders and the helmet fit perfectly. well about 3 months later it was summer and i went for a haircut and i had my long hair cut short. only then did i find out that my nice looking helmet didn't fit anymore. i never took into account for when i got a haircut lol. it was so LARGE that it almost covered my eyes and i had to go out and buy another helmet. now i make sure that the helmet i have will fit regardless of how long or short my hair is.
