High Milage Aspencade?

Postby Martini » Wed Jul 14, 2010 7:11 pm

Hello everyone, I'm a new member and heard someone might have some input on a question I have. I am looking at a 1986 1200 Aspencade, It is in great shape, runs great and functions properly. Thing is it has 94K miles on it. Is this too high of milage for a bike? Owner told me I should change the plugs, wires and maybe a tune-up, he said when he washes the bike the plug wires get wet and it won't run perfect until he dries them out- so he said to change them. He's selling becuase he rode it three times last year and once this year. I do know him and have no reason not to trust what he is telling me. Thanks for any comments you may have.

These bikes have a history of going over 100K or more. Sounds like it's been taken care of.

96K is really not that much for these bikes if they have been taken care of. They can go twice and even three times that before needing some engine rebuild work.

Thanks guys, I talked a little more to the owner and he corrected me about the milage, it actually has 74K miles, not 94K. He also said that he has not any major work to it other than change the oil. He has all the service records from the previous owner too so I'll take a look at that. And for those interested, I will be posting pics sometime soon.

Check the plug well drains - they could be clogged up, which could be causing the wet running problem (meaning the wires could be fine).

If there isn't evidence of it having been done recently, your first order of business is to have the timing belts replaced.
