Finally got my 'Wing

Postby snowy.vtwin » Thu Jul 15, 2010 6:13 am

Just put it on the road yesterday, an '85 Aspencade w/46K miles, almost new tires, new battery this year, throttle lock, highway pegs, some extra chrome, cup holder, not sure if floorboards and heel-toe shifter were standard or not...? I am just the 3rd owner, the service records indicate that it had oil changes every 2 to 4K miles, mostly at a dealer. Most everything seems to work just fine, altho the turn signals didn't always auto-cancel on the short ride I took yesterday (t-storms were coming).

Very nice! The floorboards and heel-toe shifter are aftermarket, Honda never produced them. The auto turn cancel is often finicky. Mine seems to always switch off when I want it to keep going, and vice versa. I have half a mind just to disconnect it altogether.

After a day on the wing yesterday learned how bad the seat sux. That stock seat won't cut it for more than a couple hours riding. I just found a large Butt Buffer on ebay, used for one trip then the guy bought a new air seat.. $55 w/shipping, half the new price.

It ran well but not as good as it could, it might just be that it needs some hard running as it has not been used much since '07 when the po bought a harley ultra. It probably went long periods of not running... according to notes written in the owners manual, it had only 640 miles since the front tire was installed 5/08. Yesterday I put on over 100 more miles, it got a little over 40mpg with around half of the miles in town.

This morning I went to town to get a can of seafoam, it already seems to be quite a bit running better, I kept the rpm's up yesterday and got fresh gas going thru it now. It ran like a sewing machine this morning after a slow warmup, takes a bit longer than my shadow to get up to a good running temp.

I ordered the shop manual, I might soak/clean the carbs over the winter.

Yes the turn signal is certainly tempermental. Also once or twice the right turn signal didn't want to come on until I pushed in the signal button once, which also cancels the flashing if it doesn't auto cancel.

ya Martini, I fish for laketrout in Lake Superior. I have a 25' Carver Santa Cruz at the Presque Isle marina in Marquette, hardly ever use the 19' Crestliner any more, I should sell it.

snowy.vtwin, lake trout sounds good, I have a great classic 24ft searay cc, we do walley and perch on Lake Erie in the western basin. So, you say the original seat is a bit uncomfortable? I have not rode mine home yet so I don't know how comfortable it is or isn't, i'll find out soon enough I guess.

Nice looking bike! Congratulations. I bought an 88 GL1500 about 3 weeks ago and have put about 2500 painful miles on it so far. I am almost ready to bite the bullet and spend $$ for a Roho Airhawk!

Another 200 mi since last post... gave the wife a ride today and she is thrilled... won't ride on the ace cuz it's loud and no hand grips. I see the maintenance schedule calls for new spark plugs every 4000 mi ! Holy wah... gotta get a set tomorrow, looks like 5K since the last set according to what I see written in the maint. log. It sure is a cold-blooded beast, gotta run a couple miles with the choke set pretty high before it warms up, and running 55 on the highway today coming home (68deg) the temp dropped enough to almost need some choke... maybe the plugs in there need to be a step hotter....

Martini, I am 6' tall and a 32 inseam, the seat is adjusted back as far as it will go. It leaves me a with sort butt after a day of on/off running.

Corkster, a couple years ago I missed a killer deal on a '89 1500 cuz I hadn't done any reasearch on the wings. My brother in law got a Harley and sold his wing for about $3000 on ebay, it had about 90K miles on it, new tires and super clean. Sold it the day after he listed on ebay before I realized what it was worth. Anyway I'm happy enough to have this one with the better gas mileage and half the miles.

ya hey that front rubber does want to come up off the road a bit now and then... :)

I finally got the seat feeling really good, beads with a butt buffer on top. Now I can look over the top of the windshield too, just perfect.

My carbtune kit came the other day so now I'm waiting for some crappy weather to give a go at my first carb sync. It has a bit of exhaust stumble and grumble at low speed around town unless I give it a little choke... I'm guessing one or more carb(s) is a tad lean.

I recently bought a'81 1100 interstate. It has floorboards and the brake pedal is barely accessible. Looking to change to footpegs and the honda dealer claims that I will have to go through eBay for them. My first question is really? There are no aftermarket pegs that will just bolt on?. Second question is what is the thread for the peg mount? Appreciate any and all advice.

Got a wing.81 1100 interstate. The fellow I bought it from is kinda flighty but supposedly knows how to work on it. He installed a Volkswagen carb on it and painted it(terrible job)and did the floorboard thing. Gonna be changing all the fluids and would like to switch back to footpegs but am having trouble finding whether aftermarket pegs will work. Being told to go to eBay. I don't have to have original, just something functional that looks good. Anyone know what the thread size I would need and/or a set that would fit?

Give Hartco Seats a call. Best thing I ever did for my 87 gl1200. http://www.hartcoseats.com/HONDA/53/Goldwing-family/Honda--GL-1200-and-1100-Goldwing/1061.html Are you sure it said to change the plugs every 4000 miles or 40,000 miles? Heck, I'd be changing plugs every time I changed oil.

my owners manual on my 99se says every 8,000. I inspect and check the gap every now and then (put away for the winter tune up) and they do not need changing and I often have 12 to 15,000 miles on the plugs. Since I have side cut the plugs though, I think I might have to change them at 8,000 but they are not showing any wear and they are around the 5,000 mark. Check at 4,000 to see if your manual is correct, I do not think so. just me thought. :D :D

snowy.vtwin,

Congratulations on your new Wing. Sounds like you have a great bike there even if it has set for a while.

One thought as I read one of your earlier posts that the front tire was installed 5/08. That is what, seven years ago. I would suggest you check both front and rear tire for date of manufacture and if more than 5 years ago, I would consider replacing. My main reason is you also mentioned that your spouse now rides with you and anything that can make things safer for my wife is important. Most tire manufacturers also recommend changing about that time.

Enjoy the ride and keep putting on miles.

I would second that suggestion, 7 years could cause some unexpected tire issues when you are enjoying yourself the most and possibly ruin your day. :D :D
