a service only offered at Harley dealer

Postby golden highway » Sun Oct 25, 2015 7:03 pm

A Harley owning friend of mine stopped over today and was admiring my Goldwing. He said he was thinking about getting Goldwing. I thought he was joking at first. He has nice Heritage. If I were going to own a Harley it would be his. He said his bike always needs some type of repair. This time it needs timeing chain guides replaced at $1200.00. The bike only has 17000 miles on it. The extra Harley only service is $350.00 that gets you an oil change and they tighten all the bolts that vibrate loose. He thinks he'll go ahead with that service since he always has something falling off or rattling from loose bolts. He went on about Harley issues and cost. I never realized how much money he put in his bike every year and apparently he isn't alone. I still can't get over they offer a a service to tighten bolts

Yep! A fellow I know was a hard-core Harley fanatic (everything in his house was HD - pictures, ornaments, everything!). His plan when he retired was to buy a brand new Harley & tour the USA, going to major league baseball games in every state. When the time came, he rode several Harleys, then made the mistake of riding a new Wing.

Result? Bought the new 'Wing, and massive garage sale of HD stuff...and he's never looked back.

I just wear my Harley T's all winter, LMAO.... I do not have much other HD stuff except the bikes. I also made the mistake of riding and then owning a Goldwing GL1800 and have not looked back. As the opportunity comes along and people decide my HDs are worth something, the offers get better and I am selling them off. I will probably keep one, an Evolution Softail Custom chopper, for town run around riding. It is fun to ride, except for the vibration and the noise. But for once in a while it is okay.

Now to the original post... Twin Cam Harleys have an aftermarket kit available that can switch the cam chain drives to gear drives, which then do not require that $1200 service. If I understand correctly, it costs the equivalent of about three chain services tho. One thing - a person no longer needs to worry about blowing up their engine if they do not get the chain servicing done in time. Worst idea Harley ever came up with - twin cams, chain driven. It is apparently the nylon shoes the chain rides on that are the problem. The chains eat off nylon, which then clogs the oil pump, and an engine with no oil usually grenades in short order.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

Themainviking the conversion is what he was talking about. Figures it will be cheaper in the long run with less worry. He is about to drop an easy $1500.00 in a bike with only 17000 miles. It should just need an oil change and washed at that mileage.

I agree. T shirts are really nice looking and top quality. I have 6-7 pcs
Also, I found that they have an excellent quality of leather riding gloves and I use them all the time.

I found plain Goldwing shirts, in all colors, at Americade. I bought half a dozen, blue, red, black, grey. All they have on them is the Goldwing Emblem (large) across the front. Just plain excellence, I had also seen many Goldwing T's at Wing Ding when I went there, but one would kind of expect that, right? I have some shop shirts that I got from an Embroidery company in Arizona. He makes all kind of Goldwing related embroidered stuff. A bit pricey, but custom, exactly as a person wants. I have large embroidery of my own bike on the rear, with my name on left front. This guy did the embroidered shirts and stuff:

HD COSTS
$.00 for this
$$.00 for that
$$$$$.00 for IMAGE

;)

"Owning a GoldWing, PRICELESS".
Ditto on getting one.

Almost 200,000 miles now on my GL1991-I and I didn't 'NEED TO' change the timing belt at 121K.
Yup, almost 200K and just the usual expenditures changed. Tires, fluids, couple seals, etc..

"HD... A PRICEFUL RIDE"
"GW... A PRICELESS RIDE"

.

"OIL CHANGE?" _FM 07-2009
Know its new taste and be loyal, you'll know when to change that oil.
Taste testing as the miles flow, souring as that acid grows.
And don't flirt with dirt or darkened oil, all the faster your engine will spoil.
