do I or not
Hi All,
the winter is starting to arrive colder days and shorter daylight i keep going until i cant take the cold anymore lol, saying that the old GL1100 needs new front seals and springs i think new total rebuild and same with rear suspension. do i want to do this or just start looking in the new year for a decent 1500? this was/is my first gold wing and i am staying with them even though all my friends are HD riders lol.
Parts easier to find for the 1500? i heard its a bigger bike i am big guy 280lb so i think bigger is better lol
Not sure what i am asking or trying to get across to you. Just trying to put whats going on in my head (been told shouldn't go in my head without adult supervision lol)

if you are going to buy a 1500 wing do get one with reverse, you may not always need it but one day you will

Get a 1500 you will like it. Keep the 1100 or you will regret it besides what will you ride while you rebuild? Two is more better than one.

Re: do I or not
Having had both, I can definitely say that parts are far easier to find for the GL1500 than the GL1100 - there are just more of them out there. Lots of new parts still available from Honda as well.

Let's face it if you are wanting to get a 1500 you could restore the 1100 to new and you will still want the 1500. If you buy a 1500 you won't regret it. After I bought my 1500 I started thinking if the 1500 is this much nicer than my 1200 what would 1800 be like

I am going for a 1500 in the new year, at this time i will keep the 1100 and update the suspension,i think i will sell it eventually let someone else enjoy riding on a machine that was ahead of its time back then in 82.
Rick
PS on the 1500 what is the best model year/years to look at i would love reverse i not getting any younger or stronger lol

97-2000 SE models are the ones you want. Honda fixed the the tranny issues with Valk parts, the SE models have all the bells and whistles.
While the 1100 is quicker off the line, the 1500 is faster from 3rd gear on. the 1500 is bigger and WAY more comfy.

I have a 96se. Are there issues with that year I should be looking out for?RoadRogue wrote:97-2000 SE models are the ones you want. Honda fixed the the tranny issues with Valk parts, the SE models have all the bells and whistles.

Re: do I or not
Some of the earlier models had problems with 4th gear not engaging properly. you can read some of it here..... viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9950&p=47388&hilit= ... ems#p47388...... not all earlier bikes had or ever will have an issue, its just something to watch for when buying a used bike.

Thanks I think I encounter that often. Just figured it was something I was doing. Going from third up I think it's gone up and let the clutch out to find I'm still in third. I thought it was odd that I only had that issue in that shift change.

Re: do I or not
if you havent added the shifter brace yet you should. It may just solve your lazy shift problem, not to mention making it easy to find Neutral
