What's My Name?

Postby Solina Dave » Fri Nov 13, 2015 11:59 am

My curiosity's got the best of me again. I've been wondering, ever since I began subscribing to this forum, and other forums for that matter, why many, if not the majority of subscribers, don't open and close posts using first names? I generally only see UserIDs, or most often no name at all. Of course I realize the necessity in having a UserID format to make the site function properly, but I always feel that it offers a more personal and informal touch, when a first name is used. Some do, but most don't.

Why is that?..........................................Dave

Dave,
I try and use a person's given name if I know it. As you say, it's more personable.
Since my "handle" doesn't make my name obvious as some, I have it in the signature.
I think others intentionally leave theirs unknown for several reasons.
One being the fear that their privacy could somehow get compromised.
Others use that anonymity to allow remarks that wouldn't be said face-to-face.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood!

Dave,

I think Chris has explained it the best I have ever heard! It is interesting that over time real names do come out for most posters. And unfortunately some use the nickname to hide behind when they post.

Harvey, that's the reason that I deliberately didn't mention those possibilities in the original post. I was pleased to see that response so quickly from Chris. I wanted to see if anybody else was thinking that way without any prompting from me, and I think the answer is obvious, at least so far.
I hope that there's no fear factor. I wouldn't want the terrorists to think they'd won!

Thanks to you both.................................Dave

Hi guys... Not afraid of terrorist here... or to meet anyone face to face. In fact I would like the pleasure of meeting a lot of the people on this site. Maybe someday I'll be in Ohio and meet wingadmin.... Maybe when he upgrades and I buy his pretty white 1500. :D

Not at all Rick. Having your real name there, somewhere in your posting is all anyone could want. Just so you're real, and not just a number.
I hope you get a grip on your RA. I know how that can cramp your style. Maybe if you just stay nice and warm this winter, you'll feel better in the spring. Springtime in Rhode Island, that's gotta be nice!

Good luck..................Dave

I have not used my name on anything in so long, I have to think to remember it. I have been known as Viking or The Viking in every circle in which I have friends for about fifty years. If that is not good enough for folks, then I am very sorry. As a long time biker, that is the way it is, was and always has been and probably always will be. It is good enough or it ain't. If it is - happy to hear it; if it ain't, then you have my wholehearted encouragement to draw a line through my name in your social register. Live and let live have always been something I agree to.

Regards
Viking

P.S.: if I hide behind my "nic" in these forums, and do anything to offend others, well WingAdmin knows all my particulars, so he can scold me properly.

screen names are a way to portray how you see yourself, your given name you have no control over. a screen name lets you show the world who you have become over the years. your given name is who your parents thought you you should be.
I myself use both, my given name is in my signature line, but I answer to both. Heck I have even been known to answer to 'hey A$$h0le" every now and then...... 8-)

My screen name comes from my wife's mother. She was a very outspoken woman, who after losing her husband at a very young age, moved her 4 kids from Buffalo, NY to FL. Her favorite term for anything she thought untrue was that's a crock of sh__! Long i. Anyway she lived with my wife, and I the last 5 years before she passed. We became very close like a second mother. She had 3 sons, and treated me like the 4th. Hence the Crock4 screen name. A way to keep her memory alive for me.

Hey crock...Bob... that's a great story. I get along with most of my in-laws also. This should be another topic. How we got our user names... As for me I did not choose mine, it was thrown at me. Eight years ago I took up skydiving. They said it looked like I was break dancing as I was flailing through the atmosphere.  Things are much better now. I supose I could of used my CB handle that I've had for the last 37 yrs. "picklepollock"... But that's another story ;)

well, i got my user name from myself. when my wife and i had a motorhome 6 years ago, we were always out wandering on the roads, so i figured the best names for us would be me as "roadwanderer2", and she's "roadwanderer1". now that we don't have our motorhome anymore, but i have my 2 motorcycles, im still always wandering the highways, so the name still fits.
