Increase in Site Traffic

Postby minimac » Mon Dec 14, 2015 11:12 am

I'm sure WingAdmin could get exact numbers, which is not the point of this post, but has anyone else noted the big increase in traffic on this site? I abandoned the Saunders site shortly after the sellout, and am glad I found this one when I did. I lurked for quite awhile before joining, but feel that for info on maintaining my 'Wing-and just plain kibitzing- this is one of the best places on the interweb. A personally involved Admin, good posters, and the best how-to pages help to prove it. I guess that old advertising tagline was right- " You Meet the Nicest People On A Honda!"

A lot of things went wrong at the Saunders site, even before the sellout. Anyone who mentioned something that any one of the numerous "moderators" didn't like, found their messages silently deleted without notification or explanation. Some of the "moderators" had beefs with others, and with members. One of them took umbrage with me, and despite the fact that I had thousands of posts there - most of them answering questions and helping others, he started deleting everything I wrote, so I took that as an indication that it was time to leave. Shortly after that the site was sold, and the mass exodus of members began.

When I set up this site, I decided I did not want to make the same mistakes. No heavy-handed moderation, no power trips, no secret moderators controlling the users as they saw fit. I can count on one hand the number of times I have deleted a post - and then only after a thread degenerated into name calling and insults. I have only had to "lock" a thread twice. I credit this entirely to the fantastic members we have here.

As for the increase in site traffic - believe it or not, it's not a recent phenomenon. The growth here, both in number of users, postings and site traffic is pretty much linear. If you look at all three of those things on a chart, they are all almost a perfect straight line, from the beginning of the site until now. I couldn't be more thrilled at the fact that people derive information, help and friendly conversation here, as that's exactly what I had hoped for it from the start.

I was already a member here before I bailed from SS site quite a while ago.
I bailed from there shortly before the sale when one of the mods deleted a link to a vendor I had posted that was having a very good sale going on (20% off with free shipping) with their very reputable windshields, which would result in significant savings for the members!! I called him out on it and he said they (vendor) were becoming too 'commercialized' with their postings. (they only had a handful of postings)
Last time I checked (about 2 years ago) I see they have a special forum now for vendors! I hate hypocrites!

I migrated to a couple other Wing based forums for a little while, but made a more focused group dealing with motorcycle camping my main forum nowadays .... but I check in here daily to see what's new .... more so now that the weather has turned. :)

I still watch the other GW sites.
I guess after 35 years of marriage, I can look past all sorts of insults. :D

One of the major trends in traffic I see here tends to be right after the monthly newsletter.
Seems that there are a lot of people creating their first posts then.
This tends to be even higher when a great contest prize is offered, like the shift pivot brace or the gift certificates.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood!

The monthly newsletter definitely drives a ton of traffic. That's nice to see.

The nice thing here is the freedom in which I can run the site - really, I can do anything I want to this site, if I have an idea for a page or function, I can just create it and put it online. So if you have ideas for what might improve the site, please speak up! :)

I also have not been a long time member here- but do like the atmosphere - and the site itself, well run and it must take a lot of time and energy to keep this all running smoothly - thanks Scott.

I like the fact I can do a search and find a fair bit of information and even a google search for issues usually finds a link pointing me back here.

cheers

:D
