Appeal to our British Members

Postby Rob H » Mon Jan 04, 2016 12:08 pm

Hello everyone

This is a request for some guidance from our British members.
As some of you may know, following our American trip Lucy and I sent the Wing to the UK in preparation for a European trip that we are wanting to do.

It is with my Mum and George in Cornwall. Now it went through the MOT today which is a good thing but she says it may have to go for "type approval" which will require it to be trailered down to Exeter.

Can anyone give us any advice? I am sure that most of you have had some experience because most of your Bikes came from the States.

Would appreciate any advice

Regards

Rob & Luce.

Thanks for the link.

Did you have to get type approval on your bike, assuming you imported it yourself?

You are probably best emailing the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) here: ecwvta@vca.gov.uk and explain to them your intentions. They should be quite helpful. I know that the age of the motorcycle has a great deal of bearing on the import process - as I understand it, the older it is, the easier it is. I have never done it, so there might be others on the site who have practical first hand experience.

By "sent the Wing to the UK" you mean sent, NOT imported, NOT being UK registered, right.

Why were you told it MAY have to go to Grace Road ON A TRAILER if it passed its MOT test, never heard of anything so daft.
MOT inspector should know better, GoldWing is symmetrical (I have never heard of a LHD GoldWing). I have been riding GoldWings since 1981, all of them US spec imports, even when they were built in Ohio my GoldWing was a US spec import, and not a UK model, I have never seen a RHD mirror or RHD headlight..
If at first you don't succeed, hide the evidence.

Sorry, Sent should be Imported. Could not import on temporary basis because of the time frame. Only 6 months as a temporary import. So we have to import it and register . Will do the trip across Europe and then re-export into the Middle East and then into Africa.

Its a pain in the ......

If I had known all this before I sent it from America I would not have done it.

I am British but have not lived in the UK for years.
