Hello! Picked this up tonight, what do ya'll think?

Postby Brandon2282 » Tue Jan 12, 2016 10:32 pm

Picked this up for $200 tonight, was told it needs carbs cleaned and tank cleaned. I've turned it over and it tried to fire up. I'm totally excited and think I got a great deal. Bike is in amazing shape minus the body panels. Any input? I've dealt with a lot of v twins and crotch rockets but this will be my first goldwing.

First, welcome to the forum.
You've got yourself a "naked Wing".
With a little effort, you'll have yourself a real fun ride.
Good luck with it and keep us posted how the project goes.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood!

I think that you have picked up possibly a nice bargain if the bike runs.

Hopefully without not too much work also :)

The 1980's were pretty quick once they are running right....
Be sure to spend some time on the brake systems once you get it running.
The process when picking up an old resto-mod project I use is this:
1) Get it going (running well)
2) Get is stopping (brakes & tires)
3) Make it pretty

That way you don;t spend money on pretty only to find out it will ever run again... :(

first off, welcome to our happy (ever growing) little group. you have a really neat looking whats started as a cafe racer wing. i bet once you get it running good that bike will be very quick without all the extra stuff a full dress wing has on it. keep us posted on your progress.

stuart.

And of course, CHANGE THE TIMING BELTS. If you loose one, the motor will bend valves at the very least. It's easy, it's cheap, and with a wing you don't know the history of, it is necessary.

4 years, 40k is the limit on the belt, no matter how "good" it looks.

if it knocks when you take off, it will need a carb sinc (out of sinc carbs will make it sound like marbles are rolling around in the crank case and make you think the engine is toast... it's not a good sound)

As for making it pretty? For a naked wing, it's pretty easy... only a few things to paint.... :)

You will find they are awesome bikes and you got a great deal!

The best thing is, it can only depreciate by $200!
