I don't understand what he was thinking

Postby koyote » Wed Feb 17, 2016 10:07 am

There is a 1985 wing for sale locally. The price isn't bad, but it's a bit high for what is ... a project bike. I don't care how well it runs. It's a project bike.

Apparently, it's half black and... has a batwing.

I'm not sure what the seller was TRYING to accomplish, but you have to see the photos to understand:

(I'm currently looking for a not-too-intense project bike, gl1000, 1100, or 1200. )

No one ever really knows exactly what another person was going for. But if I had to guess, I'd say the fairing was damaged somehow, or he really liked the Valkyrie Interstate and decided to try and make his own.
And dont you know? 'Custom' bikes are worth a LOT more.....

Hah! If they are done (like, all the way done), and done right, you might get your money back..... maybe.

I think that word custom only applies to the original owner. it's "modified stock" for everyone else.

Every seller thinks hes got a pot of gold.

I still like to see the individual's work, ideas, etc.

There is no accounting for personal taste, having said that it also bears saying that if we all liked the same thing this would be a very boring world............think I will pass on this one though. 8-)

I kept thinking of a lowball offer.... for $800.... it's a lot of parts. But it's not as easy to run a gl1200 bare as a gl1000.

It may be another case of "I'll sell it for what I have in it".
He just may be adding in his time, that's all. :D

I was thinking more like...

It appears that he was going for his own version of a silk purse using sows ear parts. It may be his idea of beautiful, but he may still have some more damage in mind, like painting the saddlebags and trunk flat black to match the tank. Or perhaps he even intended to turn the black parts, silver. As is, I would offer the $800 if I wanted the bike, but probably not go any higher. There are a lot of parts on it, but it needs a lot of cleaning up. Personally though, I believe I will stick with my maintenance free model.

Maybe.. he was attempting to "Fit In" the "Sow Crowd". 8-)
And/or maybe that crowd didn't want real competition.

Then again, those 'biker' clubs, NUMBER ONE rule, "To be in this club you own a HD."
Yaaaa, talk about racism.... HD's don't want faster competition.

:? Then there's that OTHER rule. If your parts don't fit ours, you must quit.
Overheard 'biker' club motto:"If it ain't cannibal, it's bannable."

Oh, it's a bucket all right. Bucket 'o' parts. If you needed motor, shocks, driveline it'd be fine. But there ain't enough lipstick in the world to make that pig look good. I know, I've farmed pigs, and my wife is a cosmetician. (True story! :ugeek: )

Sadly, I actually know what a cosmetician does. And the difference between a cosmetician and a cosmotologist. My wife is an esthetician.....

When I look at used bikes, the more factory stock, the better. Some bolt on chrome doo-dads don't hurt but when the ad says customized or chopper it's a pass. :D

Yes and no..... I've seen some really nice custom's that I'd ride. But for the most part... yeah, stock is better.

I still think the honda line stuff on the olderwings looks better anyway.... It will never be a Harley (nor would I want it to be one), a batwing fairing is more like being a poser although, it might look pretty good on an older naked (sacrilege)

and of course, there is my project... the F4B... :) But that's just putting a cut down windshield on and taking the trunk off.

I dunno. I mean, this particular attempt to make an aspencade/interstate into a F6C clone is not great.

But, yes. On an older GL1100 with just smaller side cases, or a GL1000 with the old Shoei cases? the batwing could work.
