NYC Half Marathon 1983 Goldwing Camera bike and BMW camera bike

Postby thunderwing » Mon Mar 21, 2016 8:03 pm

Did a job with the photographer for the NYC half marathon, he basically rides reverse saddle on my backseat and shoots the pix of the runners while I avoid getting on the live tv coverage from the BMW custom camera bike.

I've done this a couple of times, kind of weird when the racers pass the jumbotron in times square and I see my bike in the live shot at that instant, very surreal, we get a police escort and the bike is credentialed, so basically you get to blow every traffic light and do 80mph thru the battery tunnel to get to the finish line in time for photographer to be set to photo runners.

I've attached some pictures of the camera bike with the microwave feed that goes to the helicopter live feeds and the camera rig they run off the back...

Enjoy.

Best,

Scott

Interesting - I never saw a GL1100 camera bike before! Doesn't look too comfortable, for either driver or photographer...

Is that a Steadicam rig next to the video bike? Hard to tell in the picture.

Well there's always a 1st for everything......It's uncomfortable for each of us, especially for him as the night prior he was hit by a shot-put in the knee so he had to hang his legs over the saddlebags instead of feet on the rear boards. Freak accident for him, but in the end we covered it. I've done almost 10 of these events in the last few years, they are different that's for sure.

The BMW bike gets the Steadicam mounted onto it, there are 4-5 of them that work the event, they all line up in the morning and get the crew together to shoot. It's interesting how they put the bikes together in terms of gear and how they are wired up with a video light to shine on the runners(night time run)microphone with softie, and the microwave equipment to shoot the signal to the helicopters overhead.

These bikes travel all over the country to cover events.

Here is a better picture of the BMW camera bike with the steadicam rig attached.
