Anyone ever been stoped or written up for a non DOT approved helmet? I am looking at the Nolan n43 air.

N43Trilogy is the DOT approved version, same helmet, no top vent. I'd wear which ever one I like and not sweat it.

I just got pulled over tonight in Omaha NE and got a ticket for wearing a non DOT approved helmet. (one fo those little dorky beany looking ones) The ticket was 98$ and the officer lectured me on the dangers of how non DOT helmets can shatter and the shrapnel can stick into your skull. He said he was also an motorcycle accident investigator and had seen it firsthand. The cop seemed to know his stuff and was even nice enough to give my girlfriend a ride back to my house (which is about a half mile into IA--he was a Omaha NE city cop) and I wore her helmet. It is DOT approved. So lesson learned. Always wear DOT approved helmets because the police (Especially bike cops) can spot a non DOT helmet quite a ways a way. Plus they took my non DOT helmet as evidence but I can get it back after I pay my fine and jump through the rest of their hoops.

Move to Texas, they don't care if you have a helmet or not!! Never mind if it's DOT approved.. I wear a helmet, just because I am nervous of what would happen without one in any kind of accident, but I do like the idea of riding without one!! Just to coward (or logical) to give up my helmet and it's safety..

I do think the officer may have been exagerating for effect, if the Helmet is approved to european safety standards (Which a Nolan would be) it is as safe as a DOT approved helmet, if it had no rating European or American then it could do nasty things in an accident, but I would wear a DOT or Snell or European approved helmet without a second thought to legality.

I feel the euro standard is just as safe as dot...from that perspective, I see no problem with it...on that note, you could always buy the air and then some of these:

or snell too!

Not legal of course, but mos cops wouldn't know the difference, and the sticker stands for Doin your Own Thing...
