RADIO UPGRADE

Postby Dayta » Thu Jun 16, 2016 12:37 am

Hey everybody,

Out of all the after market parts and accessories out there by a wealth of manufacturers, I have yet to see a music radio upgrade for the 1500. Now, maybe I've been locked in a closet or off into hyper space and missed something that would improve the sound. I've upgraded the speakers (polk 4 & 501's), added an amplifier but still missing the sound I'd like. The conclusion is the radio head itself. Again to my amazement no after market radio head. Sooo, here I am on the forum reaching out asking for directions. Any suggestions guys and gals? Any info given will be deeply appreciated.

Thanks
Dayta

Some upgrades are best let to the owner, for everyone's taste is different. Probably why Honda left that alone and let you choose. Then there's this constant new this & that that changes folks wants like, std in dash designed radio, GW style in the shelter, CD and USB and Cassette Tape, blah-blah and yada-yada.
But I do see your point. I don't see it a cost effective for Honda to build a radio upgrade, way way too many individual tastes out there. Even in modern cars the radio is in all essence, non-upgradeable, it's built into the vehicles security system. MAYBE that's another (FUTURE) point why Honda has not offered?

There isn't a designated place for a radio like it used to be for any type of radio. I'm talking about 'In Dash' style. We're left to our own devices (hammer and chisel) to shoehorn in something that wasn't designed to be.
There's only so many places on a motorcycle one can place a radio AND STILL operate it safely. Again, owner chooses.

Taste testing as the miles flow, souring as that acid grows.
And don't flirt with dirt or darkened oil, all the faster your engine will spoil.

There have been several that have installed a marine radio, but it's no easy task.
Here is one example that I could find quickly.

a lot of owners don't want to give up the intercom or CB that is integrated with the stereo on the 1500. You can add a remote controlled marine stereo in the trunk or something like this and then build from there.

Thanks FM-USA, Wayne and NVSB4,

Good replies by you all. I had already figured I'd have to "McGyver" something to achieve the sound I want without losing the essentials of the stock radio. Now, where's my shoehorn? I bet the wife knows. She's always moving my stuff. lol

hello Dayta how are you? part of the problem is the radio and part of the problem is the size of the speakers, seeing that a radio upgrade wouldn't make me happy and I didn't want to loose connection with the cb, cut up the fairing to put in larger speakers or and another radio in the trunk I decoded not to add to the noise pollution and put a headset in my helmet, it's not the greatest either

I'm another one who would like to update the sound system - we ride in parades with the Patriot Guard Riders and I have a sound system on my Ural that allows me to put music onto a thumb drive, or SD card. I'd like to find a wway to use that thumb drive, or card, with the radio on this new GL1500SE of ours...

If you have a smartphone you can get music playing APPS that mimic Juke Boxes. Earphone OUT to your radio IN and you have a screen to choose songs or Randomize it all. MP3 @ 128 bits in a 32 GB card will get you DAYS of non-repetitive music.

Would this fit your criteria? (see below PIX and URL)
I have one of these and it works as an addition to my main radio/CD player in the trunk. It also amplifies, tho 200 WATTS is a stretch, it's more like 50 watts.

Thanks - I've already got an audio system: Shark Audio that allows either USB thumb drive, SD card, or auxiliary input (iPod, etc) but I'd have to mount it somewhere and mount the speakers, unless I can tap into the bike's speakers. I guess I'll end up doing that when I get some spare time...

I tried both ways, tap into and run it through the aux. amp.
What didn't work was the USB-SD-Amp player thru the radio then speakers, really over powered the speakers along with a hummm. That hummm might work for Frank Zappa but not for me. :)

There's USB-SD players that's small enough to fit up front somewhere, like in the top vents in the GL1500. Problem is you have to make it weatherproof. (HINT: Craft stores have sheets of self stick, closed cell Neoprene)
