Steve Saunders site is no more.. at least for me

Postby wilmo » Thu Jun 16, 2016 9:27 pm

Unfortunately Goldwing facts ceases to exist. Can't log in, requested a new password, which I received but it rejects it. Not getting any responses from them so as far as I'm concerned, they no longer exist. Too bad, that and this site are the only two forums I frequent and now, this is the only one for me. Ridiculous how suddenly you need a presidential pardon to use it. I'll be here more often now.. Thanks wingadmin for everything you've done and haven't done, like screw up this great site like VerticalScope did to theirs.

may be permanent, I don't know. they decided to lock everyone out, some 60,000 member, all at once and force you to re register. Now with their great intelligence, their server is inundated and can't handle the flood. This is only one of about 1000 forums they manage and they did this to all of them. At once. Not to mention the supposed email onslaught they created attempting to tell all members of the changes. At once. Get the picture? Undoubtedly they are now marked as spambots and that's why many aren't getting the notices and finding out by nasty surprise they aren't members anymore. I am one of those who didn't get any notice. Some intelligent administrators they are.

You have to ask yourself...what would cause a forum management company to, unannounced, suddenly change the password of every account, on every site they manage?

To me, this indicates a massive data breach, as in, they have been hacked. If you were using the same password on the Saunders site anywhere else (a poor practice), I would advise you to change it on those other sites as well.

What is troubling is that there is no announcement, no explanation, just sudden invalidation of existing passwords.

They will lose a lot of members, because from personal experience, about 10 to 15 percent of users PER YEAR change their email addresses, but don't update if on the forum. Those people will never get the notification, and are now effectively locked out.

Personally I haven't used the Saunders forum in years, after having been run out of there by a few heavy-handed moderators with an attitude.

A useful site to find out if your login data has been breached somewhere - it's not all inclusive, but it's a start: https://haveibeenpwned.com

Steve Saunders site not only one affected. I also got notice from gl1800riders.com to reset password.
For now I'll just stick with this site, trike talk, & Motocampers site.

It's for all of the 1000's of Verticalscope sites (I frequent GW Owners, GW Facts & GL1800riders)
Definitely not planned out well, but all allowed the password reset after a couple of tries.

Rumor has it that theres been a data breach or as they say these days a hack on all of Verticalscopes forums. And to reset your password you either accept the one they give you or you have to make one up per their rules. I belong to 2 of their forums and this might be the stick that breaks the camels back for me. I really havent liked either since Verticalscope took over and the forums are run like some rich boys toys rather than what they should be as like this one. Considering how large they are I would think they would have better protection than to cause members all of these issues.

Never got the email message, won't let me in, so bubye Goldwingfacts.com. See ya in another life.

Incidentally, GL1800riders has done the same thing, so they must be owned by the same $#@&s as the other one, so Bubye to them both.

Add me to their LOOOoooOOOoooOONG LIST of blocked members @ GWF. (like it mattered).
Couple years ago a 'Major Mod' (the W guy) there basically told me where to go...(JUST short of, go F-off... or did he? Will have to search my saved records). :?

Seems he was PO'd at me for winning the Slow-Ride 2 years in a row. Something he took HIGH PRIDE in, in his Tater country. He claimed I had a Gyro on the bike (the sore looser). Didn't matter me trying to tell him the only slow riding I did was in 'Stop-n-Go Traffic'... (the unbelieving sore looser).

The Truth about Verticalscope forums

45 Million Accounts Hacked At Some Of The Biggest Car Forums

Visitors to many popular car, sports and tech websites including VWVortex, The Truth About Cars, Pirate 4x4, Focus Fanatics, EvoXForums, and AutoGuide should change their passwords ASAP, reports ZDNet. 45 million accounts hosted on VerticalScope’s 1,100 sites have been compromised by hackers.

[Full disclosure: I’ve done some freelance work for The Truth About Cars before, so yep, I’ve got to change my password, too.]

Experts at LeakedSource, a breach notification website, believe that VerticalScope, which owns sites like VWVortex and TTAC, may have stored too much data in one or several connected servers. The volume of data cracking one server may have given hackers access to several others, as they say, “there is no other way to explain a theft on such a large scale.”

Furthermore, a database sample given to ZDNet shows passwords that were hashed and salted with MD5, an obsolete method that is now too easy to decipher. In addition to passwords, email addresses, the site visited and a user’s IP information (which can be sometimes be used to determine location) are all listed in conjunction with the usernames that were compromised.

Lack of HTTPS encryption and the use of vulnerable older versions of the vBulletin forum software were other weaknesses in VerticalScope sites noted by ZDNet. So far, they note, the data has not appeared for sale on the dark web.
The Truth About Cars, one of the sites on the network affected.

VerticalScope Vice President of Corporate Development Jerry Orban confirmed to ZDNet that they are investigating the breach:

We are aware of the possible issue and our internal security team has been investigating and will be collecting information to provide to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

We believe that any potential breach is limited to usernames, user IDs, email addresses, and encrypted passwords of our users. In addition, we are reviewing our security policies and practices and in response to increased Internet awareness of security-related incidents, including potential incidents on our communities, we are implementing security changes related to our forum password strength and password expiration policies across certain forum communities.

In addition to numerous car forums, Toronto-based VerticalScope hosts sites on many other topics, including pets and home improvement. Even if you’ve resisted the urge to tell everyone on CadillacOwners that your brougham is the best brougham, you should probably check your other frequently visited sites anyway. A full list of VerticalScope’s properties can be found here.

If you’d rather search for your particular username or other identifying data, LeakedSource now includes all of the hacked information from the VerticalScope network.

The fact that their databases were hacked, and that they simply sent people an email forcing them to reset their passwords (no explanation given) without admitting to the data breach is unconscionable. People deserve to know that their information was lost, that passwords were stored insecurely, and that they need to take action should they use that password anywhere else.

They did not even both to send me an email. I went through the 'Lost My Password" song and dance and it worked again for me....for one visit. After that, I'm locked out again ever since. Tried to reset my password yet again...but it doesn't even recognize the password issued by the reset.

And, of course, they don't bother to reply to emails about the matter either. Sounds to me as though they've lost interest.

Just as well, I guess....I cannot say that I ever learned a thing by being there.

That's one big problem with companies buying up and owning forums like these... It all becomes about making money so corners are cut for lower costs and less member involvement from the company towards the member... we get a lesser quality forum and are at more of an identity theft security risk.

Update, lots more than just Saunders site... Vertical Scope owns thousands of sites, many of which a lot of members here may use (I belong to several). They have bought many, many sites that you may be unaware of (many auto and motorcycle ones)... There was a hack in Feb 2016 that was discovered in June... maybe occurring at a site they bought but before it was purchased.... but that doesn't really matter. Unfolding events are having them notify many members and force password changes. They are instituting many good security policies regarding passwords, being caught much like Target was... Just posting this as an fyi to take your login and password seriously... a function of the world we live in... Have you changed yours lately? Is it a hard one? Is it used elsewhere?
