Warning about Scam on selling your wing

Postby NetTech94 » Thu Aug 25, 2016 3:40 pm

Recently I thought it might be time to upgrade to a 1800. So posted 2 ads on CycleTrader. In less than a day got a text message to my phone to send a message to an email address

As a IT person and surrounded by various hacks and things this jumped right out at me as a scam. So thought I would put up a reminder to my fellow GoldwingDocsers...

Here is the message
Thanks for getting back to me regarding my text...I hope it is in good condition? and there wont be any cause of disappointment if i purchase it from you? I want to buy it for my dad and I am ready to pay the asking price. I'm a Marine Engineer and am currently on sea right now which is strictly no calls. My Mode of payment is PayPal because i don't have access to my bank account online, but i have it attached to my PayPal account. Since I'm requesting this transaction to be done via PayPal, I will be responsible for all the PayPal fees/charges on this transaction, if you don't have an account with PayPal, it's pretty easy, safe and secure to open one. Just log on to http://www.paypal.com I hope we can make this transaction as fast as possible. Less I forgot, I have a Mover that will come for the pick up once payment is cleared in your PayPal account and they will be handling the everything for me, as I look forward to hearing from you with your PayPal information as requested below.

Your PayPal e-Mail Address :
Full name:
Firm Price:
Address for pick up:

Many Thanks.

After I informed them CASH, US Bank Cashiers Check or Cleared US Bank Check I got no response. In addition, I informed them I would deliver the bike to their shipper once finance has been cleared.

I signed it with my name and "Support 2nd Amendment Rights"

Glad you caught it before doing anything stupid! Seems very strange to me that someone could use PayPal but could not go on the same internet to their bank and arrange payment that way. I have paid bills while travelling all over this country.

But the bottom line when selling a bike is cash or the buyer will wait till a check has had at least a week to clear. I don't trust bank certified checks as I know a dealer who got scammed out of two motorcycles with fraudulent checks.

When using PayPal, all the buyer has to do is say that they were scammed and didn't receive the product and PayPal pulls the money back out of your account.

Definitely a scam. Their occasional glitch in their sentence structure makes me think English is not their first language. People make mistakes but...

He can PayPal and have a 3rd party pickup, wants to do it ASAP, no dickering on price.

Nothing this person says is believable.

when i put my 83 aspy on craigslist, i put in caps and bold type, "CASH ONLY, NO PERSONAL CHECKS, NO PAYPAL, NO CASHIERS CHECKS, NO BANK CHECKS, NO TRADES, and IF YOU WANT TO TEST RIDE IT, PROOF OF MOTORCYCLE ENDORSEMENT IS REQUIRED AND YOU MUST HAVE CASH IN HAND BECAUSE IF YOU DROP IT YOUR PAYING FOR ANY DAMAGE, AND IF YOU WRECK IT, YOU BOUGHT IT".

Is the F.B.I. allowed to recommend a prosecution anymore? ;)

Oh right. Prosecutors are supposed to make up their own minds with regards to the law.

That same type of scam has been around since day one. I wonder if there is anyone really stupid or naive enough to fall for that.

The older i get, the more prone to vigilante violence i become when hearing about these types of people. Impersonation of a patriot, trying to steal from people, brazen enough to come to your home to do it. Just amazing.

...+1.... Stolen valor really burns me. My son, whom is in the Army, caught one and totally made an ass out of him in a fast food restaurant. Maybe my son is a stronger man than me. I would of probably not of been able to hold back. :x

Another common one is where the "buyer" says that he will pay you more than you're asking, and you then supply the overage to a third party.

So basically, if you are selling something online, and you get a message that includes one or more of these features, you can generally assume it is a scam:

- Buyer is overseas, out of town, or otherwise unreachable
- Buyer is acting as "agent" for actual buyer
- Buyer wants you to open account to accept payment
- Buyer wants you to ship the item
- Buyer wants to give you more money than you are asking for
- Buyer has extremely poor English, grammar and/or spelling
- Buyer greets you in a strange way, as if you are already his best friend
- Buyer is pushing for a very fast resolution to the sale, time is of the essence

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but is taken from my own personal experiences. Can anyone else add to the "common scam warnings" list?

Yep. What the OP experienced. If you get a SMS (text) wanting you to contact them by email you know right then it's a scam. It happens to me every time I put my cell number on Craigslist.

When I was looking for my GW.. I saw SEVERAL ads in Cycle Trader that were suspicious. pictures the same- just different locations, prices too low- same descriptions, word-for- word-
one of my complaints about these selling sites- even eBay- is that it is so hard to research SOLD items- to see what prices are current. eBay used to show sold items, I guess they got too big? I know these sellers like to place ads with outrageous prices- just to use the site for advertising- be it motorcycles, guns, furniture- or whatever..a listing that doesn't sell is CHEAP advertising.
be very careful about ANY ad that seems too good to be true-
