Rear brake problem

My rear brake seized up. I had someone blow the piston out of the caliper and cleaned it up. Put on new pads and seal in the caliper. I spent alot of time trying to bleed it before I realized the fluid was coming out of the piston area. Now I'm stuck again with a new problem. Any suggestions for what has caused this? Until I fix it it's front brakes and down shifting for me. Thanks.

Just got the opposite problem. front brake must have leaked fluid 'cuz now the lever goes straight to handlebar with no brake pressure. Need to get that fixed, but my question is: Is it safe to drive with just the rear brake operating??

I don't think so. The front brake gives about 70% of your stopping power. That being said, if you are only riding in town and not fast, with downshifting I would think it's ok until you get a fix. I would do it. :D

answering the first 2 posts, If I understand correctly, you have brake fluid coming out around the slave piston. If this is correct, do NOT ride the bike like this even if you don't use the rear brake, fluid will leak out and get thrown over the wing, brake fluid does very NASTY things to plastic and paint!! It is also not great on aluminium and rubber seals!! Get it fixed, either your piston is damaged or the seals where not put in, or put in incorrectly by whoever repaired the brake caliper. :|
Two poster number 2, do not ride just having the rear brake unless it is just to take it to the shop to get repaired. Most of your braking comes from the front brakes and whilst you can ride leaving plenty of room, some short sighted driver is going to pull out in front of you at some point and you will not have a pleasant outcome.. :shock:
If the lever is coming back to the bars, you either have no brake fluid in the system, air in the system or both!! If there is no fluid you need to find where it leaked out and fix that, then refill and bleed the system. It could be the master piston seal that has failed, but that is very rare.. Get it fixed before you ride, we are vunerable enough on a motorbike without missing 70% of our stopping capacity.. :oops:

After reading this and getting advice from a couple of my friends, i think I'll cough up the $60.00 for having the bike picked up and taken to the shop. I just had it repainted, etc. and want to save the paint job AND my neck!!!

If you wind up needing a front brake master, don't rebuild yours, but go get a sport-bike style upgrade from Randakk's Cycle Shack. The difference in front brake pressure is nothing short of amazing! I got one and I'm very glad I did.

Thank you. I did not put the piston back in properly and ruined the seal. The second time I did it correctly and now have good rear brakes. Thanks to all you guys. Ian :D
