Pesty bug, what is it.

Postby FM-USA » Mon Sep 26, 2016 9:26 am

I've looked on the Net past few years and JUST could not find what bug this is.
It's VERY small and has a painful bite, about thrice that of a mosquito but so far no welt but a very slight irritation for a day or two.

The only time I get this bug is when I'm riding and passing someone cutting their grass or field.

This black bug with a white stripe on its back is no bigger than 1/16th inch so my pix rendition is what I remember seeing it as since I'm smashing it in less than a 1/4 second.
ANY IDEAS?

My niece, with a PhD in Entomology, says that she could probably tell you what it is from a picture (your drawing didn't help).
So quit slapping em and get your camera out instead. :D

I'd guess it was some kind of gnat. We have biting grass gnats around here that get stirred up when you mow but they don't have a white stripe. They're almost completely black.

I don't think they're very photo-graphical, they're so small the 5 meg phone camera I have the focus won't go that far in. Besides, I'm not taking the time to pull over and stop, I don't know if they're burying there head. As we get older our immune systems get weaker, blah-yada.

But a pix I will try. Problem is, it happens MAYBE once a year.

Still stuck with this pix for now.

From your description is sounds like a deer fly. However they are generally a little larger than 1/16 inch. more like 1/4 in.

Deer Fly? Nope, not even a baby Deer fly.

The little pix I made is really close to what it looks like. It's so small I can't tell if there were antenna or legs, I'm sure that are.

Does this little thing have a hard shell, kind of like a tiny beetle?
When the farmers around here are fertilizing their fields, there seems to be a bunch of these little bugs. They are black but I haven't looked at one close enough to see if it's got a white stripe on it.
Hurts when one of the little bas...darlings bites or stings.

The first time I ever smacked one, I had to whack it twice.
So I suppose it has a stout body but I wouldn't say it has a shell.
It doesn't skwoooosh like a regular bug, it comes apart in sections, usually 2.

slightly updated pix...

I don't think we're talking about the same bug. Thinking back and looking at your drawing, the one I'm thinking of is more rounded but it is a shiny black color.

It might have a slight shine but not sure, I whack it soooo quick.
Definitely not glossy.

I SURE HOPE it's not a new bug, I DO NOT want my name attached this critter. :x

I've got our pet clinic investigating. Desk girl said she might have someone who could know.

Been looking at a lot of bugs on the internet. Lots of black and white bugs but I can't find one with that "V" shape.

Couple weeks ago I ran across that site and gone through a couple dozen pages.
WOW, lot's of bugs! But so far nothing like my bug.
I have sent a pix and description so I hope they know and get an answer.
