First Goldwing!

Postby SouthernJourneyman » Wed Oct 12, 2016 8:36 pm

Hey folks, new owner here. I've owned various bikes over the years, cruisers, street bikes, and most recently a Honda XR650L dual sport. That XR was a really fun bike to ride. Lightweight and a bit peppy after I bored it out to 675cc. The downside is that I ride to work an hour there and back again. After a while the buzz of that thumper would get to my back and hands so I decided I needed something different. Tried selling the bike on ebay a couple times and then finally listed it on craigslist.

Couple weeks after I listed it I got an email from a guy about a Goldwing, would I be interested in a trade. Sent me a pic, 1978 GL1000, and it looked good. In the pic at least. So after reading some stuff here and over on Randakks blog I went and took a look at it today. Honestly wasn't expecting much. I mean who trades a '78 GL1000 for a half wore out dual sport. Oh, the dual sport was just shy of 35,000 miles. It had been rode hard and put away wet several times.

So I ride my bike to the guys house and he shows me this Goldwing that is in amazing shape. It has a few cosmetic blemishes, but barely noticeable at all. Turns out the guy is a retired bike mechanic. He had bought this bike three years ago after the PO had it sitting since 1998 and had just over 13000 miles. So after he bought it, he went through and replaced all the hoses, belts and such, cleaned the carbs and tank and all and got it in good running order. He put a few hundred miles on it so now it's just shy of 14000 miles. Starts right up and runs just as smooth as can be.

So after making sure the guy was absolutely sure he wanted to trade, we swapped title for title. Oh, and while the bike is sitting naked right now it came with a Vetter fairing and luggage, king and queen seat, plus that rear grab bar I've learned is on the rare side. Can't wait to rack up some serious miles on this bike.

Here's the bike I gave up:

And here's what I rode home:

Welcome to the forum.
I think you got the better end in that deal. Nice looking 1000.

Sweet deal you made there

do you know if the belts were replaced, if not you should put it on the top of your list
you should have many enjoyable miles on your new ride

Thanks for the welcome.

aj- The PO replaced all the hoses and belts during the rebuild. This all happened about 2 years ago and he only put around 200 miles on it since then.

Welcome to the forum. I think you'll find your new ride a lot more comfortable on those trips back and forth to work.
A little less buzzy!

However that XR may be nice running around out here in the cow pastures. ;)

Not to disparage the XR, but you definitely got the better end of the deal!

Nice, but I would have kept the XR too. Every time I've gotten rid of a bike, I later wished I hadn't. My biggest mistake was selling my 1974 Kawasaki Z1 900. One like my old one is now going for $20,000 or more.

I agree with you on that. I have 7 bikes and think, maybe I should get rid of 2 or 3 so I can finance a new to me bike. Just can't seem to do it. Would be like selling one of my kids. Which I have considered many times, Lol.
Yup, those kawie Z 1's are bringing top dollar. I attend the Mecum bike auction every Jan. here in vegas. I don't think I've ever seen one sell under 15k. Cheers, G.
