Just a guess -- You probably have to get the name of the last registered owner and have him release the title. If he doesn't have the document, you will need to produce a bill of sale from him and possibly a notarized affidavit. If the last "owner" told you to f***off, you probably have to go through the DMV for the name and contact info. And don't be surprised if the true owner wants a few bucks for his trouble. But your first step should be to check with your DMV for the best procedure.

Either that...or when you talk to the true, registered owner, he might say, "hey, that bike was stolen from me eight years ago!"

Go to your DMV with the serial number and they can do a title search for you at a low cost

you might check into abandonment. you use to be able to get titles that way as long as its not stolen. i used to work at a car dealer and after 30 days and car not picked up by owner the could file for an abandon title.

Sounds fishie if the guy you got it from won't help and told you to f... off! I would have your local police dept. come down and run a vin check, and explain to them the situation and the other guys responce. Once you have the clean and vaild vin check papers, thake them to the DMV. and let them do the work. Don't be suprised if this bike has changes hands many times in the past and the title is lost. The cost for a lost title can range from $5 to $25.

Good Luck!!!
How many times do I have to tell ya,,, The right tool for the right job!

Geogia and maybe some other other states did not title bikes until the mid 80s. I bought an 84 1200 in GA and was told (after the fact) there was no title because it had never been titled and was not needed to get plates in GA. Went to the TN DMV and learned he was correct. It took some extra paperwork but ended up getting a TN title with a bill of sale and the last GA registration. The Previous owner did have to sign some extra paper work which he did. Took a few weeks. So check on what the licensing requirements were for 1981 where ever you bought the bike. Otherwise, other than help from the last registered owner, you may have to go some kind of salvage title route. Good luck!

I was under the assumption that CA kept old DMV for 10 years. After that the vehicle was purged from the system. I got the feeling that you might have to pay back fees and registration for those lost years. When I worked as a Service Manager at a motorcycle shop (in Ca) I had to do vehicle liens on bikes left at the dealership for non-payment. What a paperwork nightmare!!

You're smart to have a service do it for you... trust me it's worth every penny they charge so you don't have to do all the 'triplicate' paperwork. The guy you bought it from wasn't the legal or registered owner so he can't sign it off. Hope it wasn't ripped off!
But expect to pay!

Here is a different but similar issue I have been trying to straighten out. The original owner had a loan on my bike when she purchased it in 1983. After 5 years she made all of the payments but can't remember ever receiving a new title sans the lein holder. Now she sells the bike to me and give me a proper bill of sale but the title still shows a lein by a bank that when defunct several years ago. We now cant figure out what we need to do to get a "clear title". To complicate things we are in NY state.

I think that if someone is buying a bike, they should have the clean title giving to them on the spot and then get a bill of sale.. The guy that sold you this bike needs to be punished. He is not a cool dude..I'd tell my Mom or Grandma and have them talk to him with their broom stick..Then take a video camera and film it and put it on youtube as they beat him with their sticks..

I did a Google search, and came up with this page, describing the same problem, and what a few people recommend to try.

I'm sure your Mom or Grandma could kick butt but this guy might not have done anything illegal. He might not be a 'cool dude' but

that doesn't mean he should be punished. Maybe bad Karma will be his punishment.

this is easy.... contact the showing lien holder on the title. They can check their records and probably charge you for a title release. Then take it to the DMV. Legally a vehicle can't have a title change if there is still an outstanding lien holder.
You don't have anything on California DMV... they are the ultimate in PITA.

It's not easy...if you read his problem, the lien holder is a bank that no longer exists. There is nobody to contact.

Oops..... I misses that part. That'll teach me to speed read.
So.. bank went under... loan went under.

Probably isn't that simple... but there's got to be records. Somewhere.

If your DMV in NY is ANYTHING like ours in Calif...talk to at least 3 different people. You'll get 3 different answers.

Then go to a supervisor... they will probably be able to get-r-done.
